  • Never posted on here before but pretty proud of my ride this weekend so…

I did the Etape Caledonia…On my Raleigh Twenty.

A lot of people asked me “Why?” as we were going round and I got to realising that the Twenty is actually my most suitable bike. Of a stable of 8 bikes currently, the twenty is one of only two with gears, the other being my mtb. Everything else is singlespeed or fixed.

You’ve to average 13mph to stay ahead of the broom wagon which, having looked over some of the recent rides on the Twenty, I thought might be a bit of a challenge so I made sure to position myself up near the front of my starting group and actually I averaged just over 14mph. Max speed was 43mph.

Not too many photos as it was a bit of a sufferfest.

I really don’t consider myself a ‘roadie’ and other than commuting I very rarely do a ride that’s 100% tarmac but I keep seeing things about the Etape too late, once it’s already sold out. I’ve also thought it was pretty expensive. This year I saw an early bird entry offer and had just gotten a little backdated pay thing at work so went for it. The feed stops were very welcome but I was planning on doing Ride to the Sun next month (also on the Twenty) but it’s further (100 miles), unsupported and there won’t even be shops open as it’s through the night so I’m reconsidering that.
