Much of Europe was authoritarian up until fairly recently. No economic collapse was needed to turn Spain, Portugal, Greece, Czechoslovakia, Poland etc into functional liberal democracies.
Getting a bit fed up of hearing about the looong lines of world history being the explanation for everything that is happening in Ukraine right now.
