I wrote an app BikeGPX that’s designed for this. Basic navigation is free. RideWithGPS requires a subscription.
Google Maps and other apps designed primarily for car users are terrible for battery life IME.

I looked at yours when you mentioned it a couple of years ago but I think it doesn't do power, is that right? I think that's why I didn't use it.
Agree that the car apps / Google are not great for cycling.
The ones I have on my phone are:
- rwgps, which I pay for,
- osmand, which I paid for a small one off amount,
- bikecomputer pro (ditto), which is the best all round alternative I've found for my needs as it does power, and it's designed for cycling, - cyclemeter, which is very good for intervals.
- rwgps, which I pay for,
I use Garmin 530 for navigation on audax and touring. I follow a preloaded .gpx, say an audax event provided one, this works well within device limitations. Being old school I carry a printed routesheet as backup.
I also have an Android phone with me - can I use this as a backup routing device? I have Google Maps, but that does its own routing. I also have Garmin Connect.and RidewithGps apps loaded- can either of these navigate a predetermined .gpx route? I feel they might but can't see how - or is there something else for this on a phone?
