Anyone with an allotment?

all of that, I would just add:

• check for any waste that would need disposing of, might be under mountains of weeds
  
• any weed membrane will be a nightmare to remove
  
• when I got my plot, a week later I found out that horse manure gets dropped off on the other side of the allotment and so its about a 10 min round trip for a whellbarrow of muck.
  
• size, you might get offered a half or full plot, how much time do you want to commit to it?
  
  

Im not sure I would have changed my plot anyway as the others were overrun with brambles which would be a much bigger task than the nettles and grass on mine.

You’ve got a good list… shed beats no shed; how shonky is the access; how much old cr@p is there on the plot/how overgrown… any evidence of bindweed etc. reality is, unless super lucky, will most likely be a plot thats been abandoned… all mine have been!

Apparently half plots only for newbies, so won't need to make a decision on that

Unless you’re feeding a large family a half will be fine. We have a 3/4 size and friends treat us as a grocers.
Junk, membrane and old carpet are definitely worse to deal with than brambles.
Pile up big rocks, chunks of concrete etc along with any metal poles you might find, they’ll always be useful down the line.

Alliums and first poppies are out.

Decided to start this over, small logs, twigs, rotted woodchip then the old soil with added compost from home 4 rows for variety not just carrots this time.

Looks like ours - when will you harvest?

Depends on the weather - last year was wet and lost some to rot; if we get dry few weeks then will try and hold out to june for bigger bulbs. Definitely not watering from this point. Also thinking should have had some squash ready to stick in after…

Busy day roasting in the sun today.
About 20x tomatoes in along with some tomatillo, peppers and aubergine.
Decided to attempt to grow a cucumber up the plum tree so will see how that goes.
Need to strim and weed desperately.

Just back from my plot visit

Rather annoyingly we saw one perfect plot and one pretty good plot, both offered and taken by the other two people visiting, who were higher up the list than me

I now have a choice of a very long skinny plot, shaded all morning by a big hedge, or a another plot fairly shaded by a big willow. Both quite cute in their own way I guess

Both not too badly overgrown

Long thin one is better for access, water etc

Willow one is probably less shaded, especially if I can remove the pollarded tree on the right. They branches are quite slim so could be cut easily but the stump is bloody enormous

On both, the plot administrator person is quite unclear of the boundaries. Not sure if the shed is included in the willow one, for example. I guess you just have to get hold of your plot neighbours and negotiate what they think is theirs

Lots more planting done- sweetcorn, cima di rappa and a few other misc things.
Paths topped up, potting shed now almost empty. It gets bloody hot in there so might be a good spot for a loofah and a melon perhaps.
