I'm just finishing off a bag of the Rwanda Rwamatamu Lot 4 which has some nice acidity to it. I also have the natural Honduras they have on right now which has the winey fermented natural taste quite prominently, if you like that. Recently they've had more dark chocolate/nutty Brazilian options than usual I think, but having bought from them for quite a while their range will change completely fairly frequently.

ready to deliver effort-free stimulant as soon as I stumble bleary eyed down the stairs in the morning, enjoyed in my grey towelling housecoat, a quadragenarian testicle visible from the straight-ahead.
I see you've been working on the new copy for the website.

It’s all getting a bit earnest these days, just doing my bit to push on.

Interesting and classy response. Thanks for the insight.

An aeropress will be much easier to clean. That looks like it’s going to leave a mess of fines in your coffee.

Anyone near Islington able to help collect something coffee related this week and hold onto it for a couple of weeks until I'm able to collect from you, or possibly package so I can arrange a collection? Pm me if so. Happy to repay you in cash/coffee/beer

What's the purpose of the plunger? Isn't it basically just a tea infuser?

Dunno. Give it a final push?

I have to admit, I’ve felt pretty meh about the last few bags I’ve had from JGC. Not bad by any stretch, but off the back of some absolutely stellar bags from elsewhere (mainly randomly picked up from cafes when I ran out), I think I’ve spoiled myself a bit. I mean, spending £16 on a bag and then comparing it to something half the price isn’t really fair either!
But after a long trip around lots of other roasters, I think YB is calling again!

Coffee is so variable, you can buy a banger then the next bag leaves you a bit flat. The recent purchase Lucid Rwanda Shyira natural was great, I mistakenly picked up a bag of the washed and it’s ok but hardly exceptional.
At least you don’t feel cheated when you buy from the likes of JGC or Horsham when you could have spent £16 for 200g of meh. What were the stellar bags?

Personally I think JGC are every bit as good as the most expensive hipster places out there. I think their prices are better due to a combination of them having much lower overheads than new places and that they've been going so much longer rather than a difference in quality.
My local place is great but I just recently spent 22 euros on a 250g bag of a limited run they were doing and it was massively underwhelming, a couple of years back I got a kilo of an Indian coffee for 20 quid at JGC and it was one of the nicest coffees I've ever had.
I guess my main point is that in modern hipster coffee land I don't find price to be the best indicator of quality.

Conflating price with quality and taste? Just because you don't like something, doesn't make it lower quality, nor will more expensive = better taste. There's too many variables in the coffee, the process and the human consuming it.

My point about JGC was not at all to do with quality. I think their quality is very good; I'm just struggling to find coffees from them that match the style of coffee I enjoy. I used to enjoy reasonably dark roasts, so I went to Monmouth Coffee a fair bit. In more recent years I've started to enjoy more fruity coffees with a bit of acid. I'll give JGC another try and pick out some things from their Filter Roast range.

And they had a great one from Burundi too. -

Anyone knows how I'm meant to be approaching using medium-light roasts in espresso? My usual coffeebean subscription sends out beans which are generally geared towards filter brews, which I find always results in really fast extractions on the espresso machine (18g in 36g out in 20s or so) because of the lack of oils. I find that going any finer tends to result in uneven extractions/channeling, but I'm not sure if that's a bean problem or user error (I don't WDT because the Sette is an excellent non-clumpy grinder)? Otherwise quite like the taste of them regardless but feel like I could get more body from most of the coffee I make.

FWIW, I’m not slagging JGC at all. But I’ve just been having some fairly average bags - good coffee but nothing has really blown my mind.
Nothing to complain about, but just makes me think I’ll try some other roasters next.
It’s funny, I just never felt disappointed with YB, and always enjoyed the rotations of why was available when I ordered. On the flip side, I can’t afford to drink £16 bags as a 2x daily coffee.

I know, that's why my response wasn't to you 😂
I've had plenty of fruity bangers from JGC but it's been almost a year since I've bought anything from them so can't comment on current stock. One thing for sure though, is there's nowhere comparable to them from a value point.

I honestly couldn't give you a name, I'm not in the UK anymore so haven't bought from them in about a year.
I'm also fucking terrible at keep track of what I've bought but I remember it being the fact that anything labeled with an exotic fruit descriptor like pineapple, passion fruit, grapefruit etc was pretty reliably fruity where as things labeled blueberry, cherry, apple etc just had acidity rather than bug fruit flavours.

good enough thanks
I view them as usually getting the fruit notes to the forefront and some big boozy flavours from the south American aerobic process coffees they often feature, I don’t like Brazilian/nutty coffees though and never order anything from Brazil or Guatemala as whoever roasts them I just get this horrible paper/cardboard mouth feel/taste.
Peoples tastes vary, I know people who love coffee but an Ethiopian natural tastes like horse poo to them.
