  • 120 miles is good going! In the few tours I've done, I found I generally did about 10 miles / 16 km per hour, with total distance per day simply a function of how many hours you cycle. This of course includes stopping time (I cycle faster than that!) - but you need to count that in for things like stopping to read maps, backtrack, interpret signage, deal with poor gravel tracks, go to the toilet, have something to eat, buy food, etc etc etc. Where are you going in spring? I hope you have fun, I'd love to go on a big tour (i.e. more than just 2-3 weeks), I'm very jealous...

  • Well today is postponed for brutal weather, that according to the MET office would follow me through the central belt of Scotland and then pish on me all night near Oban. So tomorrow hopefully. Normally when I ride, I dont stop I ride for hours then stop when im home but with this type of thing I have literally all day and some evening so 120 mile doesn't phase me and its a relatively light "touring" set up on decent roads (albeit a bit fast lorry vibes at times).

In terms of the big trip, its ride to Newcastle from home (Dunfermline) and get the ferry to Ijmuiden, Netherlands and...go. Probably initially to Morzine to focus the mind as I lived there for a bit. I need to goto Kosovo for instance...I love the Balkans. No time limit just, as long as I can stand it, naturally being very budget orientated. Also have to take Brexit into account. Perhaps I will really hate it and be home in no time haha but I am lucky enough to be well traveled as a solo traveler and bikes are my life so....should add up.

  • Devathlon had some ok options including a small light d lock

  • I bought one of these: https://thebestbikelock.com/best-u-lock/mason-85-from-seatylock-review/

Less than a kilo and Sold Secure Gold rated. Will use in combination with cable lock for the front wheel if I need to go to the loo/into a supermarket, etc.

  • Don't go to the loo, it's overrated :-D

Nice looking lock btw, thanks for sharing.

  • Looking to get something to lock two bikes together while on tour in Austria, Germany, NL next month. Ideally something light-ish that will just dissuade any opportunists rather than any serious level of security. Probably just while we're in supermarkets, restaurants etc or overnight at campsites or in the wild. Have a Hiplok chain which I'd normally wear around my waist but would be nice to have a lighter option as that's a beast. Any recommendations?

  • I've got one of these and it's a nice mix of light and relatively robust

  • Abus Bordo Lite is good, if you get 2 you can join them together to make a long loop to get around awkward locking set ups.

  • Hello mate! I bought the Hiplok after meeting you in France and being impressed by it, so this would have a nice synchronicity to it. Cheers for the link

  • I've always gone (successfully so far) with dental floss and hope, but have generally avoided the lawless lands of western Europe.

  • TiGr mini, 430 grams

  • I have a litelock for more dodgy areas.

I use one of these for lower risk, I paid about £10. 350g
