Narrower tyres would cut through to the sweet grav below. I imagine it's something like this:

Gravel bike mudguards... Still punishable by lethal injection, or have we toned down? Seems to me that good, suitable guards for your bike are better than without.

I have aluminium ‘guards, everyone should

My all-road bike has metal guards on year round, my true gravel bike has just had the guards removed for summer. Love a good set of mudguards

Both good approaches.
I remember a particularly wet and sloshy winter gravel ride, where just the one dude who was running mudguards had a very clean jersey. I tend to to run them now, but prefer clip on for ease of removal/cleaning.
If I had an all-road bike actually built up (maybe soon), I'd keep them on that.

With a wheel swap that’s my winter road bike & commuter so they’re on all year. If I had a dedicated Crux (Akrose) I might not have ‘guards, though I do like a dry arse

+1 for all year muddies. They also stop loads of dust, stones etc in the dry summers.

-1 for mudguards.
No one riding with mudguards has ever been nicknamed "King" anything.
