I'd pay the extra for a Katu over the Errand

The errand seems like an orbe katu clone? I dont think the cost much more with a bosch middrive.
The omnium style one seems kind of interesting. Hub drives are not really so terrible as people make them out to be just not as much torque. They are fine for city life in my experience. But no experience with Promovec motors

100p would rather have the hub motor in the back than in the front on one of those.
Riding unloaded over slippery surfaces would almost certainly cause a crash with a front motor.
I spent quite a bit of time riding mail delivery with a front motor - it was not pleasent.
The trike with a rear motor though - it was great fun tricking the cadence sensor going into a turn to make it lift the inner wheel.

Thank you Lufgussers, you’ve confirmed my thoughts about wanting a Katu.

The Ridgeback cargo range is just supermarket-standard bikes rebranded for the UK market. At least you'd expect Orbea to have actually designed theirs and spec'd them to a decent level.

I had a Ridgeback Errand and now have a Katu, about the same tbh. That hub motor has more 'oomph' than the bosch active line on Katu IME.

I only went with katu because I have 3 spare Bosch batterries that I can share with that.

I’ve just spoken to someone that sells the Errand and they reckon that is just a first gen disc braked Karu or as they put it the Mark Mk2. As @amey says the Bosch batteries on the later Katu would be good as Liz has one of those too.
I still need to go for a ride on one with Dolly if she doesn’t like it, it ain’t going to happen.

Looking to buy a Bafang mid-drive to put onto a Surly Big Dummy + Ted trailer. Prob pulling 150kg max, hydraulic disc brakes if that makes a difference for the sensor thing.

Any advice/pointers - or is there an existing Bafang thread? - from folks who have bought/used them? Or where to order? Thanks in advance!

Probably you want an hd maybe, but maybe the normal one is also fine

thanks Young_Gun - my head was thinking that (wallet less so), the bike & trailer on it's own is a lump, so erring on the side of power. Speed not important, but am guessing it goes hand-in-hand with the power?

I've decided to go with a legal 36V 250w Bafang on my Bullitt (because legal and also because I already have a 36V battery) and awaiting delivery from eBay.. whilst not 1000w, I reckon it'll still be a great help.

What i can say is i have had a bbso1 on a trike. And with 250kg including me and bike it handled it fine when that was what we needed to do. Its more about headroom

Great to hear, cheers. Having no experience of e-motors and gauge of the figures, I was presuming I'd need to go for a high-powered one, but thats reassuring to know.

The reality is it will be for 10km max, and boosting at lights and assistance on occasional hills, so emphasis on pedal assistance, not van-replacement-level power.

I've got a bbso2 on the bullit. Which had a box on the front. I have a 52v battery on there I think.
I would regularly twat around with 2 kids and me on it all over Lewisham. Up college road (and others like it).

I've not used it so much at the moment but it can handle me plus my eldest (who is essentially my size) on the front to glass mills and back 2 times before needing a charge.
I think that's probably 150Kg all in.

Envolio automatiq: anyone got one and rate it/hate it?

Seems it might make sense for someone who doesn't know how to use gears. Can they shift when stopped?

I did a couple of runs to wickes to get topsoil on Sunday. 2nd run was 8 bags, approx 150kg give or take some moisture. Luckily Wickes is higher than my house. Low speed handling was a bit iffy but otherwise it was fine.

Total weight was circa 275kg.
