  • Sorry, thought I'd replied to the black tie responses the other day! I'm quite lazy (and don't want to wear black tie anyway) so renting still seems quite appealing. Either way, what should I look for in black tie? It seems pretty strict but is there any variation in style/fit at all generally?

  • The thing with renting is in principle it makes sense, use once and not be stuck with something you’ll never wear again but for the cost, buying secondhand and selling after to recover most of the outlay is the approach I’d be taking. It depends how super sharp you want to be but you’re coming across as an unwilling participant so I’d be looking at how to attend without breaking the bank.
A friend recently told me a story how he reluctantly attended a fancy wedding and asked his wife if he could wear flip flops. She thought he was joking and sarcastically replied “of course” only to discover upon arrival that he’d done just that. Apparently the mother of the bride had a shit fit.

You're absolutely right and now I feel like a dick, haha. I really should make the effort. After all, how many posh cousin's weddings am I likely to attend in my life?
I'm also off to 3 other weddings this year that will all be fairly casual so I should try and enjoy this as something a bit different.
If anyone's got a lead on some vegan shoes that would work for a black tie do that'd be really handy. (Ideally not flip flops).
