  • I want to buy a snorkel and mask for me and my 5yo. Still not 100% about getting the snorkel for the kid. We're hopefully going on holiday in the Adriatic Sea so I think it would be cool now they're bigger. Obvs won't be "proper" snorkelling and not getting flippers or anything.

    What should I buy?

I don't want to spend loads, but having used decent rental snorkelling kit and shit stuff in the past I'd like it to work and not fog up, etc.

    Any pointers appreciated.

    Cheers

  • My wife and I got quite into snorkelling around the UK when we were allowed some UK travel during lockdown. We just bought the decathlon offerings and never particularly felt under-equipped.

  • The decathlon stuff is perfectly good for kids.

The Subea one with the wide nylon strap is good for comfort.

Snorkelling with my kids in the sea in Lanzarote was just brilliant.

  • For a 5 y/o you may want to consider a full face one. They’re not much use outside a pool or the calmest waters, but they are more intuitive and offer a larger field of view.

You can get antifog spray, or buy a tear-free baby shampoo and give the inside of the lens a very light coating with your finger. It’s possibly a good investment anyway, as less-conscientious snorkel and dive centres sometimes use dish soap, which is very much not tear-free (and is also sometimes bad for aquatic life).
