  • Love that, what's the reference again?

  • SJE093.

@hacha I’ve been trying a cotton nato on mine, I’ll post a pic when I get a chance. Finding a 19mm strap so it fits the lugs properly is the thing.

Probably my favourite is still the Erika's MN I have that's black with a grey pinstripe. I bought it for the SLA017 which also has 19mm lugs.

  • Wearing it on the MN today.

  • This is the cotton nato. I find it a lot softer and more comfortable than most of the nylon ones.

  • Thanks. The current pricing means I'll just have to appreciate the pics.

Looks sideways at seestern 62mas copies...

  • Any advice from @regal or any others. My SBGA229 was unworn for 5 days and power reserve went flat.

I have tried to wind the mainspring, but it won't get going again. The second hand starts for a couple of seconds when the crown is screwed in but then stops again. It won't recharge kinetically either (by rotating the watch on the arm).

Any idea what the issue is? Could I have over wound the mainspring? Any other ideas?

  • Does sound like a mainspring issue, but, being an automatic, you can't overwind it so I doubt it's anything you've done.

How old is it? Would definitely be a warranty fix if within warranty, otherwise it's most likely time for a service.

  • Somehow got it running again after messing around with it for a while. Had it serviced last autumn, bought it new in 2018.

    Thanks for advice 🙏🏻

  • Interesting, maybe the crown wasn't engaging with the keyless works? Like it was popping out a little too far when it was unwound? If it's within a year of a service, if it does it again, def speak to them.

Nice watch btw, always had such a soft spot for them.

  • Missed this announcement. Want.

  • I dont think they are underrated but just too expensive for most people.
    They look amazing.

  • This. They are great but somehow feel expensive. Somehow a watch if you have the funds for a few in that price range.
I also think that, say about the Rolex sub evolution what you want, Seiko makes the same watch as in 1965. Maybe sleeker, maybe better but not necessarily more exciting/luxurious. Whereas Rolex really managed to go from great tool to luxury.

  • @Regal looks stunning on the MN strap..
I’m considering a two piece bracelet in order two make it feel even thinner, and benefit a great wrist sitting..

@TRA it ain’t a cheap one, but it doesn’t feel ostentatious, I like that..

Seiko offers several great (more affordable) alternative, glance a look !

@c.h.e. Possibly because it isn’t a model they’ve been improving generation after generation, it was only a trustful recreation of a model from the last..?

I guess high end Grand Seiko dive watch feels as luxurious as Rolexes ? Maybe not in terms of image but at least speaking of product quality..?

  • Yeah, that’s always the issue with a nato for me, especially on smaller/thinner watches. The MN material is thin, thinner than a normal nylon nato, and because it’s single pass it barely adds anything to the height on the wrist. The stretch makes it very comfortable too.

I like the look and feel of the OEM tropic but it just seems too thick for the size of the watch a lot of the time. I might try an aftermarket tropic if they make 19mm, though I had one on another watch and it wasn’t my favourite. I also have a spare waffle strap from the SLA017 that I haven’t tried yet. That might be the one, though they are also quite long and on the thick side.

Seiko kind of disowned the 62MAS quite soon after it was discontinued in the late 1960s. It was their first divers watch, commissioned by the Japanese government for the arctic research expeditions, and it was designed very quickly, while they were also designing dozens of stopwatches for the Tokyo olympics. Because they didn’t really have any direct experience of what a divers watch needed to be, and no time to do R&D, they essentially copied from popular Swiss skin divers of the time - specifically the Aquastar case design, and the dial and hands from a Blancpain Bathyscaphe. (Though it is, IMHO, better looking than either.) Pic below is a slide from a talk about the 62MAS I did at the last Time 4 A Pint meet.

Once they had time to go back and create an original design, they started from scratch with the 6215 and 6159 and defined the design codes for divers watches that they still use now.

So the Seiko lineage, and the gradual evolution, comes from there, along with the 6105 (which evolved into the Turtle line and the SKXs) and the Tuna; not from the 62MAS. They didn’t make a recreation or evolution of the 62MAS design until 2017.

GS divers are better finished than a Rolex Sub, no doubt. The watch head, at least. They are still miles off with the bracelets.

  • Good info, thanks guys. Makes sense, guess the mas recreations are quite nerdy.

  • Yeah, they are 100% limited edition catnip for the collector nerds. You have to really want one. Objectively the price isn't great, but then again, they're not going to depreciate like your average Prospex. They are also priced pretty close to what a really good example of a vintage 62MAS would cost now.

  • (Though it is, IMHO, better looking than either.)

Blancpain is much more balanced Imo. Side-by-side the Mas face is a bit crowded.

  • Blue Sub & blue jean’s, matchy matchy

  • Reiterating my previous post. Longines Legend diver, 42mm, original strap, £1k. Can post more pics if anyone wants.

  • Someone on here suggest putting it up for sales in the classified actually help broaden it.

  • Post more pics anyway. It's a lovely watch and should be appreciated
