Shimano became absolute king in 1984. After this absolute tour de force where they pretty much defined the ultimate form of each component, they then went on to make front shifting work properly, invent a brake with enough leverage to lock up the front at any speed, and actually finish the design of the road bike by putting the shifters in the brake levers. Made every decade before the 80s look like backyard bullshit.
