Without it though you're exposing the pedal to the bolt heads of the adapter plate which is far more likely to damage stuff. Look at your top pic - looks like it's already eaten away some of the bolt head.
They also keep the lube where it should be and it would stop stones or anything getting in the gaps where the bolts are if, heaven forbid, you had to walk somewhere dirty.
Get some. Make Jesus happy.

Jesus, you probably use pedal washers too don’t you?

I think my Quarq powermeter came with pedal washers - which I used - right up to the point where I lost them.
-
• #1430
Nobody but you has ever used those
-
• #1431
Maybe. I'm still right though.

Jobst Brandt was the only one who was right about pedal washers - cranks should have a bevelled hole and pedal washers should be conical.

They are for 4 bolt shoes, so you don't wear out the base of your expensive carbon shoe. If you are using the 3 to 4 bolt adapter then that is easily replaced instead - or that's the idea anyway.

I've got the extender plates on mine. I still think the smoove, shiny metal base is a better idea then gaps with bolts and shit sticking out. But whatever floats your boat. Everyone is free to be wrong about stuff :)

For want of the proper bits, some gaffer tape is all I've got there
-
• #1437
Y'all missing the smooth, smooth, buttery smooth float...
-
• #1438
The horrible interface of gaffer tape on pedal does bugger all to detract from the noticeable difference from other pedal systems on that score, actually. Must be the leverage.
Surprised how well it's hanging in there.

OMG my eyes!
This is the pedal equivalent of one of those ladder safety images...

It's like you lot all failed to write properly with a pencil but just went ahead and stole a "pen licence" from the teacher anyway.

Would you rather see my soles all buggered up?
Come to think of it, I've been meaning to grab a roll of aluminium tape for ages, that'd be a much nicer bodge.
Now that I have a look, stainless steel tape is also a thing, but much harder to search for, and pricey as hell.

• #1442
I'd rather see the proper plates be used. But they're not my cleats and it's not my money.
-
• #1443
Do you mean to say their function goes beyond protecting the sole...?
-
• #1444
So the AliExpress cleats turned up. They visually appear identical to the pre wahoo aero cleats.
Fitting seems fine.
Release is maybe marginally easier, but that might be down to the old cleats getting a bit sticky. Will ride with them for a while and report back, but pretty impressed so far.

Anyone know where i can get the grease for the grease gun? Seems to sold out everywhere atm.
-
• #1446
I mean, do you really need that? Take the cap off and unscrew the pedal body from the spindle, pack the body with a load of ordinary good quality grease, squish it back on, old grease squeezes out, put the cap back on.

I just use one of these (less often than I probably should): https://weldtite.cc/collections/assemble/grease-gun

Hot tip: replace your cleats if your shins are sore and/or your shoes rock side to side too far. I left mine a bit too long.
Also pretty annoying having to dump a load of cleat bodies in the recycling so I guess second hot tip is: take a train instead of a bike :)
-
• #1449
Do better than that drive instead of the train.

The war on motorists has made me scared to leave my house and use my car though.
First I've heard of such a thing. I think I'd rather the adapter plate wore away a bit vs the pedal though?
