• My mate had issues with his BMW brakes and took it to a BMW dealer yesterday to have new discs and pads fitted. The fix worked but, the BMW garage told him there was 40% wear to the discs.
Question - should the discs not last until they are 100% worn?

    This is 100% wear

But yeah if there is 60% left until the recommended manufacturer limit he's only about half way through. If he's had it from new, then double the current mileage and he's got an easy estimate of when to replace them.

  • I'm taking this to mean there was 60% of the disc left from a new disc till the minimum wear limit.

The theory is yes, the reality is who knows with out looking at the discs. Have used a on car disc lathe before to fix scored or slightly warped discs on a 928, as the disc were so expensive to replace this was a viable option. But that cost can be more than replacing the discs on other cars.

What was the fault with the brakes?
