Hello people, question - kneejerk off-the-top-of-your-head answers only please(!), for a fairly established and pretty fast runner with a 10k in two weeks time thinking about biting the bullet and going super-shoes in time to hopefully smash out a PB and ideally win...!
Am I better going for Nike Vaporfly 3 at 25% off, currently making them £180, or NB Fuelcell Supercomp Elite with vitality / runners need discount, bringing them to I think £130?

Hamstring went again last night. Getting a physio on the case this time as I can't shake it on my own.
19-MAR-2024 Pulled hamstring playing 5-a-side football sprinting for the ball. Rested, did stretches, iced it, after a couple of weeks tested it out with some faster walking and slow running. All seemed ok.
09-APR-2024 Played 5-a-side for 1h20 with no problems. Thought it was all fine now.
11-APR-2024 Playing 5-a-side again, felt the same hamstring go again 25 minutes into the game. Rested, did stretches, iced etc, took it gently, tried out a gentle run and it seemed ok.
30-APR-2024 Playing 5-a-side, felt it start to go 10 minutes into a game.
First time I'd say it was an 8/10 on an arbitrary scale. When I played again afterwards I was very wary and so I stopped as soon as I felt something go, so only a 5/10 (compared to the original 8/10). Last night I managed to stop at an earlier sign (3/10) so hopefully I'm not ripping it to pieces.
Will hopefully get to the see the magic guy at my local physio and he can get to play with his ultrasound machine.

if you've not got a preference for a particular brand then I don't think anyone could make a real case for one over the other
both good reviews, both quick
I'd probably get the New Balance as £130 is cheap these days
you'll inevitably just buy the Vaporfly too in a few months time because you'll decide you want something to compare it to

Good response and fair points! Cheers 👌🏼

Nikes, they are the original, and thing that everything else is compared to…
-
• #30307
Or maybe the great great grand daughter of the originals…

There’s a common thread there… paying five a side… is it worth considering that you may be getting too old for such activity… ?
-
• #30309
But also, if you’ve torn a hamstring, it takes more than 7 days to heal…!
-
• #30310
Not sure where 7 days comes from. First gap was 21 days, second gap was 19 days.
I'll never give up 5-a-side, I've been playing twice a week for coming on ~25 years. In my Thursday game there are still 5 of us from our original game back in 1999.

Lose weight, improve core strength, proper preparation and recovery, know your limits.
If your warm down is 4 pints, you can expect injury after a certain age I guess.
But you know all this.

While we're on the subject of old man injuries....
Pain behind the knee, mainly at both ends of extension; so when extended straight during a walking movement, and when completely bent (a deep kneel for example). Fine when running, I think because movement of the knee doesn't fall into the above range. Anyone had this?

Also good point! May need a trip to Oxford Circus to look at them both in the flesh!

If your warm down is 4 pints
What kind of half-arsed warm down is that?
Yeah, I'm just more annoyed that I thought I'd done enough to recover from it first time, be able to play for 1h20 and then rip it apart in a supposedly easier game.
Failing to recover twice is my limit for this kind of thing, so it's time to hit up the physio via Bupa.

80 minutes is a long game, especially without half time. I play 60 minutes (when I play), and that is more than enough.

Two 40 minute league games back to back (so there was a ~5 minute half time). The team after us (who we often borrow players from to make up the numbers) needed a favour returned. My other weekly game is a mates game that's 60 minutes (well, 50 minutes as at least two of the twats are late to every single game).
Physio appointment booked for 15th May (although I may get bumped earlier if there's a cancellation). I'm not in a rush as I'll be having at least 3 weeks off football. Time to take the pull buoy to the pool though and get swim fit again.

Very impressive run/record with a total ascent of approximately 115,000ft -

Anyone know how new balance shoes fit?
True to size or run large?
-
• #30319
I actually tried on some of the New Balances mentioned above on the way home this eve; I believe I'm a 10 and their 10 fitted me spot on, so seem exactly right based on that and other NBs I already have.

Bugger.
Rebel V4 just completely unavailable in an 8. Hoped a 7.5 would pass.

I find them a little larger than Nike. You could try the half size down
-
• #30323
Sportpursuit have some discounted vaporflys even cheaper

interesting, thanks
(no good for my size 10, sadly)

Tried on the Vaporfly and the Fuelcell last night, loved the feel of the Fuelcell, wasn't so enamoured with the Vaporfly although obviously both were just bouncing and jogging around a shop rather than out on the road, so hard to tell for sure. But, turns out RN don't sell the Fuelcell, they just imply that they do... so they're out due to price. Thinking now either Vaporfly for £180, or Takumi Sen 9 for £120... both tempting in their own way!
edit - or in fact Sen 8 for £85, to make decision even trickier!
I wear my metaspeed skys for 5 and 10ks and have pb’d both distances in them, plus they look fast. Wear them.
