  • Thanks all! It's a tough one for sure - head is saying sell but the heart says otherwise.

This is deffo getting stripped either way - I'd spend more on lightening this than I will on the next build, and won't really end up with a faster bike.

BUT I think I will keep it for a bit, and see what else I can flog to free up some funds.

  • The price of old steel frames is falling as people in the market for them age and dwindle in number, so I'd say sell it if you can bear to. MGOOF has it's place, but I think that would look better as a classic build, and the parts would be great on a more modern, performance focused machine.

  • Sell now while it’s still worth something.
I have five frames that I kept too long for sentimental value. Accumulating stuff is a bad habit to get into.

  • What @Kimmo said

(edit - but if you do strip it sell it - shame to see it sit unridden as it is lovely)

  • Frame is a beaut' but i would upgrade the frame and keep the gear.

  • Frame is great and I think you'll fall out of love with "new and light" plus the secondhand market is awful. So, keep.

  • If you really like the steel frame, Id say keep it/store it and build up a lightweight bike.

In my experience I always come crawling back to steel but it is nice to try different setups.

Weightwise I never really notice that much, its the modern bikes handling/position and the different gear ratios that I notice the most.

  • I notice weight, particularly everything hanging off the headset and out of the seat tube; if that's minimised the bike feels more fun.

  • It definitely feels heavy when I'm struggling to keep up with mates on Tarmac SL-8s.

It's lovely to ride unless you're trying to go uphill quickly, where it immediately turns into a flexible anchor

  • It definitely feels heavy when I'm struggling to keep up with mates on Tarmac SL-8s

They're stronger than you. It might feel slower but it really will be marginal. Especially when riding in groups

  • Yeah, weight is mostly placebo - which is why hanging light parts off the steel frame can make it feel like a light bike. You feel the weight of the front end every time you move the bars, and you feel the weight at the top of the bike when you stand and swing it.

Light bikes may not be faster by very much, but they're fun, which will make you ride faster. Also, the great thing about placebos is they still work even when you know they're placebos.

  • Yeah, you're drinking the BigCycling(c) Kool Aid. Fadez and chrome on a sunny day is good for 2km/kr!

  • I think for older steel frames it's the stiffness rather than the weight that makes them feel worse when climbing.

  • This.

@tyeness you don’t need an identical boring carbon bike. As long as it is comfy, ride it!

  • I always think if you can get a nice carbon fork and ahead stem, that gives you a nice balance of planted front end rigidity, but the overall comfort and flex.

  • Bingo.

@PhilDAS While I am no slouch they are indeed both stronger than me, I will concede that.

@Kimmo also nailed it. I've ridden a couple of more modern bikes on holiday recently and they've tainted my enjoyment of the Fondriest. The Aethos I rented has ruined me, as a mate predicted it would.

If funds allowed I'd be keeping this built up, but they wont and I wanna go faster.

FWIW my gravel bike and daily are both steel, and one of them has daft paint so I can hopefully cling on to a shred of credibility there :D

  • I feel like these days groupsets are getting quite silly on prices, even if there still are some good deals to be had.
But anyway, i look at it more as youve scraped together a nice groupset, but its easier to swap frames than it is to rebuild a new groupset, and if you wanted to still have a steel or alu frame theres lots of choice and good prices.

  • Finally got this baddie built up

  • Yeah that's sick. Great job!

  • Very nice! Campa record is beautiful! (This thread might have more than 50% Campagnolo equipped bikes.)

Made in USA Cannondale was a different and a better era.

  • Beautiful build

  • New derailleur and were back. #dosomeweeding
