I run into this all the time. Fast lane, ok, fast is relative. 20 minutes ago my 2:10 100's were the fastest in the pool with all lanes having 2 people faffing about in them, except the fast lane which was empty.
On the bright side, it usually takes me no more than 50 metres to know my place and switch lanes when the faster ones show up :)
But also talking with people usually works. If there's a leisure swimmer doing 3:30s in the medium lanes where 2 of us would be working faster, theres nothing wrong just tapping them and asking them to switch lanes.
