  • We left London and settled in Kendal about two years ago. Long-standing Lib Dem area that's super friendly. Punches well above its weight for arts / beers / coffee, although glaringly lacking in cultural diversity... We got a detached two-bed with a nice garden and a detached garage for about 60k under your budget, so imagine you'd find something.

It's 30 minutes to the depths of Langdale in the Lake District for (I think) some of the most beautiful countryside this poisoned isle has to offer. Bike riding obvz goes without saying, and buses are surprisingly decent – but you might miss a car if you didn't have one. Very easy to get elsewhere, too (direct train from Oxenholme to LDN in about 2 hours 45 minutes, or 10 minute drive to the M6).

    *edited overly optimistic train time

  • Have friends that moved to Faversham, they like it, their house is large.

  • 4ish hours by direct train to paddington (if you get the right one), epic road and gravel riding, good local pool but can't comment on quality of club, bags of good official and unofficial mtb trails, strong local cycling club scene, access to coast by bike, current 20mph speed limit in built up areas (not necessarily abided by) but really quite respectful car and lorry drivers for the most part in my experience. Move to Carmarthenshire, 350k buys a lot of house.

  • Wash your hands

  • As an educated council house chav from Kent i’m quite tuned in to the demographics of the region.
Bit of advice for you. DO NOT move to Ashford. some of the villages around it maybe but steer clear.

  • I've been to Ashford once. FUCK THAT.

Just trying to get an idea of places. I have to discount places I've lived in (don't want to go back, or where my family / extended family are near - i'm a cunt).

  • You can probably make offers under whatever people are asking at the moment in Hastings - over 1k houses on the market and apparently nothing is selling!

  • Leeds? £350k should get you 4 beds plus garden etc. Lots of nice riding outside the city and the city is compact enough for getting around by bike really easily. Lots going on too.
I lived there for years and when I inevitably get sick of paying London prices I'll move back I reckon.

  • Sheffield! Loads of house for that budget. Great countryside, low crime but still reasonable city amenities when you want them

  • Another vote for Sheffield, though the hills are maybe slightly less appealing in a bike sense.
    What about Newcastle-Upon-Tyne?
And also what about, don't leave?

  • Surely every cyclist loves a hill really?

  • You could probably pick your depressed seaside town of choice and be in budget. Avoid the pre gentrified options.

    Redcar or Morecambe?

  • You’re describing Plymouth (actually, it’s very car-centric) but sadly the accent is mental

  • The local janners pronounce mental as “mento”

  • Redcar or Morecambe?

There are lots of positives about Morecambe, including good schools nearby and proximity to the Lake District.

Fleetwood or Blackpool would be far worse.

  • You're not wrong here, we regularly holiday/camp in switzerland and despite all the idea about ChF, as long as you don't buy meat and local authority tax, it's pretty much london prices.

  • Bath ?
I found this property on the Rightmove Android app and wanted you to see it: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/147277538

    Edit not 4 bed ignore

  • Not everyone in whitstable is a posho or media tosspot

  • All the people I know that live in Whitstable are either plasterers or sparks, and they all used to live in Bexley previously

  • All my extended family lives in or close to Ashford and it's an irredeemable shit hole. Worst "town centre" I've ever been to.

Villages nearby can be super nice though.

  • What you need to Chalfie is corner a DfL who's happy and ask them how they really are since leaving London and to be honest. Their answer will shock you!

  • 1+ for Sheffield too, very cheap housing, and great access to the north.

Just don’t tell people that when heading west to the Peak District, you’re in the midland.

  • When I were at Sheffield Polytechnic back in 88 it were the North (although technically South Yorkshire)
    Them’s were the days
