Ah ok, that crack is interesting.
Does.the flat above have any issues?
-
• #60878
flat above is tenanted and they won't see that bit of wall, because it is essentially a boiler room/washing machine room. They won't be able to see the wall above my window at their level.
Those circles you have drawn are interesting, esp the ones at the window level.
Notes from my handyman/mate:
I'm sure it's coming from the gable end wall.
Yea it's finding the ceiling timbers and then tracking in. I'm guessing working in from the wall ties that are put in to bind the inner and outer wall together. -

wanting to move house
At this point, strip it back to the brick & strip the plasterboard off the ceiling.

Was about to say this.
After a year I'd be peeling everything off with my fingernails if need be to find the source of the issue

Not even sure which thread to ask this, but…
Air filters, are they worth it? Looking at a basic one for the bedroom but unsure if they are something you can go small on.
-
• #60882
worth looking at a dehumidifier with built in HEPA filter, potentially kill two birds with one stone?
imagine that might be a bit noisier than air purifiers alone, mind
-

We bought a blueair filter for our girls room, I was a bit sceptical but it made a massive difference, my eldest was always coughing before falling asleep and first thing in the morning, cough dissappeared.
Someone will probably post some science showing it's all a scam and plecebo but whenever it wasn't used you could feel the difference in air quality.

I bought one (bluair) a couple of weeks ago as both my son and I have been coughing a lot at home, but as yet I'm not super convinced its having an effect. If I didn't already have a decent dehumidifier I would have looked at a combo as mentioned above - have had the Meaco Arete recommended to me in the past

I would 100% cut a section of plasterboard out of the ceiling close to the wall and above the window and see what's going on. It would likely be the first thing a builder would want to do to understand how/where the water is coming in from.
Is the wet light also one in the bathroom?
-
• #60886
Yeah I would say they are worth it. I'd also say don't go really basic either, get one that a decent range.
-
• #60887
Cheers for the shares all. What’s a decent range for these things?
-
• #60888
Obvs depends on your room size but I think the ones I have are both around 50 square metres:

Yeah like the Blue air one. Plus it has an auto mode.
Cheers!

air purifying I assumed was homepathy .. am I wrong? Usually I am wrong

We have two phillips series 800 that we got when we moved to a house with no carpets and the airbone dust can get high as it doesnt have carpets to hide in.
I bought both of ours cheap off eBay and then installed new filters, as they're basically just a fan connected to an air particulate filter.
Extremely happy with both, they do the job well. I dont buy into any needless 'smart' tech so we just leave these on auto and let them get on with it. -

Are you a tech bro or a hippy? Get your shit aligned asap.
-
• #60893
OK, I'm interested if it means I don't have to vacuum as often.
-
• #60894
They seem pretty ubiquitous in China but not sure they'll do much over here unless you're heavily affected by pollen or dust
-
• #60895
They 100% cut down on airborne dust, i really notice that i dont have to clean my computer screens as much
-
• #60896
We have an air purifier. It's great for winter when we keep the house shut. Cleans the dust out noticeably.
-
• #60897
wow okay, did not know that, which one to buy?
-
• #60898
See my comment above

If I've put mine on the landing can i expect it to affect surrounding rooms or do i just have a really nice vibe on the landing now (assuming range is large enough for whole upstairs for example)

Our house is open plan so we have one in the landing always, and we swap the other between bedrooms/study
above light fitting - not 100% sure. I think there is about a 0.5m gap and then the flat above. Flat above has plumbing above my bathroom.
prevailing wind/rain absolutely hammers that rendered wall. completely unprotected. Can see the sea from the top of the building. Was / is cracks in the render, which effectively had a plaster put on them which my chap said may or may not help, but it isn't a permanent fix by any means.
What surprised me last week was that the light was wet, but no evidence of any wet near the window. So that had me thinking the plaster is working a bit, but other cracks above may be letting water in. Have drawn some pencil marks this evening to track it
