  • Funny you mention the type of people who arrive by boat (formerly under lorries). They’ve without exception experienced an incredibly harrowing journey. They’ve often been supported by their home community as the brightest and best hope of getting established somewhere else. I’ve worked on and off with them since little Alan Kurdi was washed up on a beach in 2015. I am constantly amazed at the difference between how they are portrayed and how they are. They’re always eager to work, and to make a difference to the communities they find themselves in.
Right now I’m sitting out a dance at the wedding of a Syrian boy who arrived here as a frightened young lad 8 years ago. I’ve seen how he’s got an education and a career and now is about to start a family.
In addition we have close on 1 million job vacancies and the demand for workers is projected to rise sharply. Why don’t we settle asylum claims quickly, allow people in the asylum system to work while their claims are being validated and return those who are obviously not refugees?

Yeh I don't get why this isn't what happens from an economy point of view. We are also heading to growing demographic issues where an ever greater number of elderly are going to need thier pensions, care and health complications paid for by a shrinking workforce. We can either keep putting up taxes up on the young, put taxes incentives on having bigger families or let people who want to come here work. If you're feeling mean you introduce a two tier system where they pay tax but can't access all the benefits. All of Europe is waking up to this and in the future you will see competition for migrants, France and Hungary are already incentizing more children. Good news is climate change will create an ever growing pool of applications.....
