  • would i wear that under the wetsuit? or instead?

  • Layering that works for me

    Anti chafe cream
Little bit more anti chafe cream
    Trisuit
Little bit anti chafe at the neck
    Wetsuit
Final bit anti chafe at the neck again

  • sounds like you mostly wear a thick layer of cream!

  • How long does it take for the tri suit to dry? I imagine it could still be quite cold in early may at fuck-me-this-is-early o'clock

  • I’ve never noticed it wet if that helps.

  • ah thanks thats good to know

  • What size are you? I have a couple of large/x large suits you can have v cheap

  • Thanks for the offer! I have a rather abnormal aspect ratio... 6 ft 5 but very lanky. My wetsuit is an M/L. I imagine these need to fit quite snugly?

  • Yeah as the others have said, tri suit under wetsuit, and I wear my race belt with my number clipped on under my wetsuit too.

You’ll be so amped up with adrenaline you won’t notice the wet/cold, especially if it’s a sprint or Olympic distance.

Even if you’re just dabbling in tri a tri suit and number belt are almost essential.

  • Yeh I’m 6foot4 and lankyish,92kg, the large dhb suit might work but you’ll find they’re short in the legs. 2 piece kit might work better?

  • thanks guys for the tips. I think ill look for a suit next week.

Last noob question... do you prepare for flats? if so what do you take? spare tube and a co2 inflator? imagine that the route around dorney lake is quite clean but still having to call it because of a flat sounds depressing.

  • I tend not to for a sprint but I do for longer races, hence the crazy amount of stuff people have bolted on their bikes!

  • Mrs Uu raced Dorney a few times bitd and never carried anything, with decent - not ultralight tyres it was a reasonable risk to take there. Biggest risk at Dorney always seemed to be bad riding from amped up complete nodders.

For half IMs in Ireland she had a micro pump, a couple of levers and a tube - you can pack it up quite small and shove it under the saddle, with co2 more so. Given that she has no real idea how to swap a tube even after nearly twenty five years of proper riding it was all a bit academic though!

  • Spare tube and CO2 is the quickest unless you are tubeless. No point trying to faff with fixing a hole in a tube. I didn't carry anything else for an Olympic as I was very confident in how my bike was put together. Nothing else could have gone wrong that I would have been able to fix with a multitool.
Worst mechanical I have seen was a guy at a 70.3 last year who's NDS crank fell off whilst running out of transition. Luckily the mechanics there were lenient with the rules and helped him out.

  • Sounds like most people just risk it!
    Maybe I'm overthinking it 😂

How about a tyre spray? Inflates & seals in one go, though i never tried if they work...

  • For an Olympic I’ll probably* not carry anything.

If anything goes pop your race is probably over anyway apart from getting back to my belongings there’s not much point in repairing.

    *tubeless should solve anything minor.

  • Had a nice little high cadence work out in the plan today.

I can not do work above 90rpm for more than 2 minutes. That was horrific and a failure.

  • I'm not surprised 90mph is quite fast

  • Excellent point. Well made.

  • Random one,

Anyone good with Spanish? I Ned to see if one of my races is road bike only or I can use the fast one.

  • No, but I've found the free document translators to be good enough for this kind of thing. Or finding the relevant reference to the UCI rules in the text can often point you in the right direction.

  • Anyone looking for a new tri suit I highly recommend the decathlon long course suit. Really nice features for the price- jersey/ bib style zip opening so you can flap it open on run, great fit on me, back and side of hip pockets. Not awful design. No arm ridges but fit is nice.
Equally I was very unimpressed by Huub suit I ordered first. Too tight, arms too long (I’m 6foot4 so if they don’t fit me who do they fit!) and the only rear pocket is gel shaped, hard to get into due to a flap and basically between my butt cheeks so I wouldn’t fancy running with a gel down there!

  • The light blue upper one?

  • Yes that one was cheaper and there’s another colour that was 10-15 more

  • Excellent. Like you I’m not vibing with the Huub 22, arms sit on my elbow for example.

Will give it a run in October. The cargo pockets are a huge draw.
