My favourite story of de-appropriation is from Lonsdale: Neo-nazis in Germany had started wearing Lonsdale tshirts under partially zipped up jackets and hoodies, so that only the letters "NSDA" would show (the initials of Hitler's party).
Lonsdale weren't very happy about this association so launched a "Lonsdale loves all colours" campaign and sponsored a few gay prides, and suddenly it wasn't a problem any more.
Looking at all the happy go lucky scamps down in Whitehall today, it got me thinking:
How hard would it be to reclaim the St George flag from the far right?
How would they react if lgbtqi+ groups started flying it at pride, or if drill rappers, roadmen and hippies starting wearing flags all the time?
Would they think they are winning the good fight or give up on it as they couldn’t associate themselves with such undesirables?
I posed this question on a WhatsApp group and was informed that left wing groups in Israel have been doing something similar over the last few years, co-opting formerly nationalistic symbols.
