  • If you go on Vinylnet, you'll be able to find the manual for a 1500 and it'll tell you if it has a switchable power supply. Your headshell and cart will be fine as long as the headshell is straight for an non straight arm.

I'd definitely ask to see a photo of the bottom, and to see a demonstration of it in action and that the suspension is working. They're getting on for 50 years old.

  • I got so so bored of searching for turntables and not getting replies to queries, I just got a Sony PS-4300 for about £100 under my budget, so I can suck up any costs for new stylus etc. Wish me luck!

  • I've got a Project Debut ii from about 2003 I'm thinking of selling. It's in red, full working order with lid and great shape overall. It's not been used for about the last 15 years, it just continually moves house with me.

If any interest I'd probably let it go for £150, and can post some photos in the next few days.

  • Sony PS-4300

that's a really nice thing - hope it's all good.

  • You may go on a journey where a knowledgeable man in a shed does any tweaking needed but you now own something that should outlast us all if looked after and give you lots of enjoyment.
Despite being into hi-fi/vinyl for years I didn’t realise that Japanese decks have a huge following.
Presumed it was just DJ technics and not much else, couldn’t be more wrong!

  • Nice, they're were on my short list before I got the Technics.

Get yourself a can of contact cleaner, because if it hasn't been used frequently at some point it'll start acting up, and probably the trim pots will need a blast of cleaner in 'em.

  • For fucks sake, two weeks after I plump for something else, the exact thing I was waiting for comes up. This is too good to be true isn’t it? SL-1500 in original box and everything intact, under £300?
I’m tempted to buy it and sell whichever one I like the least!
    (I snoozed and loozed)

  • Any recommendations for a super-cheap amplifier and/or speakers (or anyone selling?) want to set my daughter up with my old Marantz CD player. Will probably just raid Amazon based on their reviews unless anything else obvious?

  • Nobsound! (Et al.)

Depending how cheap is cheap would active speakers from somewhere like edifier make sense?

  • thanks - think I like this as she can bluetooth to it as well. Can probably get some speakers from a charity shop ;)

  • I’ve got one driving some old scandynas in the garage/workshop - can’t fault it.

  • Can someone here ref me the technique and app used to evaluate loudspeaker placement? I've moved to a new home and need to assess the best layout for the listening room.

  • Picked up a Lenco L90 turntable in near timewarp condition for a 50 year old record player. It’s not one of their desirable players and I probably paid a bit over the odds, but it’s in amazing condition, it’s got speed control and it’s era-correct for my vintage amp builds. It’s also got its original box and packaging - I’m not going to get to use it for some time, so it can live safely up in the loft until I’m ready to get it out. Right turntable, wrong timing!

The seller didn’t pack it back away very well. They didn’t take the platter off or lock the deck, and the tone arm weight was loose and rattling around. Amazingly, it all survived apart from the needle.

I’ve just been giving it a damn good clean because it was filthy. When I’m ready to get it down I’ll probably also give the lid a machine polish because it got a bit scuffed in transit.

  • I reckon that’s a 1975 date tag on the sticker. I’ll probably change the flying DIN plug for fixed RCA jacks on the back of the unit. Might change the plug too, but there’s nothing wrong with this one.

  • All looks good and barely used inside. I did spot a popped cap and swapped it for a new one from my stash. 1974 date on the cap so that was probably original.

  • great work - looks amazing.

what's the cartridge / stylus on it?

  • The stylus is a Goldring G820SE but I didn’t check what the cartridge was before I packed it away. Never mind, no hurry to replace it.

Looking around, it might be easier to replace both rather than risk a stylus which isn’t compatible. Looks like it’s only an entry level one, so not a massive loss.

  • We’re getting rid of our amp/turn table/largish book shelf speakers to save space but I’m not sure what the best small replacement would be.

Should I look for a small wifi/bluetooth amp and small speakers or is something like a Sonos better?

Looking for decent enough sound quality and easy interface for linking multiple phones/apps to play radio or Tidal. Linking to our tv (no wifi connectivity) would be nice but not essential.

Our flat is tiny and the sofa/speaker arrangement is never going to be ideal so I’m thinking that a single speaker could work good enough and save some work with cable management.

Under £200 ideally and less is always nice.

  • I like the Sonos stuff and it ticks all the boxes but I'm not sure if it's really worth it unless you are going with multi-room where it's way ahead of the other options.

On the other hand it generally just works and is compatible with a lot of stuff and is in budget.

A Revo super connect has decent sound and looks nice, worth keeping an eye out on the refurb store. App definitely isn't as good as Sonos though.

Something like a Wiim mini and active speakers or little amp and speakers would be the separates option. Not as neat and pushing the budget a bit though.

The Naim stuff is ideal for this kind of requirement but probably out of budget.

  • Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll do some reading/price comparisons.

With Sonos is it worth going for 2 speakers set up for stereo or does one sound ok? It would be a little over budget but not crazy.

Should I consider a soundbar instead of more conventional speakers?

  • i'd say no to a soundbar if you want to use it for music.

these sound decent and look quite nice - i have one, they seem to be discontinued but you could pick one up second hand or open box like this one:

    https://www.richersounds.com/ruark-mrx-walnut-1.html

only thing to note is the UI is UNDOK which I'm not mad about and have complained about on here in the past.

  • Q Acoustics M20 is quite nice and not too pricey, for an all in one system

  • I’ve been really impressed by the two Sonos Ones I installed in our workshop. 100m2 and they still slap. A stereo pair would be great I reckon. Got ours for about £80 each on eBay.

There are a few models though so be aware. Don’t get the old one with physical buttons on top. There’s a voice assistant enabled version of the new gen, and dumb (One SL I think). You’d only need one voice activated on to tell them both what to do.

  • I only have single speakers and a soundbar but by all accounts you get more value going for a stereo pair than upping the size.

The soundbars are decent for music but a stereo pair would be much better for cheaper.

The app is far superior to the Undok one (the Super connect uses that too).

If you don't need Bluetooth/Aux in you can go with the previous model for a fair bit lower price. There's also a decent number of discounts that come up.
