  • Get that picture. Glad you did that too, I spend ages calculating ratios for our window, not sure its noticeable or I got it right (theory was 133% width of sash windows with 100% opening and the 33% fixed). You’ve also inspired me to get the one pvc window we have left replaced to match.

  • I have an unexpectedly urgent rush to do a downstairs loo :/ help!

    1) high level toilets - is there any substantive difference between Burlington (£434 ex seat), Canterbury (£329), Hudson Reed (£271), Windows (£339), etc. I’m inclined towards Burlington because I know they’re good, and maybe not worth saving £100 on.

    2) copper basin wastes. I have an old fashioned janitor’s sink - like this
but bronze not chrome. The plumber says drain pipes are normally UPVC, but is there any disadvantage to buying a (wildly overpriced) copper p trap and having copper pipe showing until it disappears into boxing?

    Thank you!

  • Pretty much watertight now. Long delay on cladding because of new fire regs and general slowness of things.

  • I need to paint those upstairs windowsills/lintels/whathaveyou black, don't I?

  • Sweet! Must be so satisfying.

What did you decide for the reading nook behind the picture window in the end? What kind of cladding are you using?

  • I would, yeah. Or strip back to raw stone and seal.

  • Nice butt...

This may have been mentioned, whats the plan for shade/solar control on the windows, an awning or something?

  • Plan for the nook is some kind of built-in bench seating on two sides. No idea where that will be coming from yet. I could do it but motivation levels are currently low!

No plan for shade on the windows. Should I be worried about that? We have a nice cherry tree on one side and a plum tree coming up on the other, so sunlight may not be 100% relentless but we do face south so it will still be 95% relentless.

  • The butt will sit on some sort of platform made from the same decking material that'll cover that concrete.

  • We're south-facing too and our two big glazed doors and windows will have zero natural shade; gonna see how it goes, will apply 3M 'Prestige 70' solar control film to the inside if we end up cooking this summer.

  • This is wonderful to see.

  • Looks great!

  • Tiles have inverse grout colours; the terracotta grout between the beige tiles looks much darker in the photos than irl.

The brick slip lime mortar will end up much lighter when fully cured. I'm trying very hard to hypnotise myself and unsee the unfixable brick slip layout fuck-up...

  • I’ve never managed to reply to my own messages. It seems the issue of waste pipes is diameter. Specifically finding something in 32mm apparently. I need to read up more but if anyone can suggest where specifically to read I’d be v grateful! It seems confusing to me that the standard for waste pipes and the standard for traps/sink wastes are different… according to my plumber

  • 32mm tends to be for sink/basins and 44mm bath waste.

Is the issue you cannot find a 32mm basin waste in copper?

  • Yes exactly. They’re all 35mm

  • unfixable

Without slightly cutting down 45 slips…?

  • You can connect 35/32 waste in different materials with compression fittings. They're both 1 1/4" nominal

  • That was an option, but the slips have tumbled/weathered corners and edges, and cutting them all down would have left a funny pink straight edge along one side of all of them. What we ended up with seemed like the lesser of two evils at the time.

  • Thank you. I wonder why he says it won’t work.

I think the combination of these might….

    1) normal 1 1/4” click clack or plug waste eg

    2) 1 1/4” to 35mm brass and copper p trap

    3) 35mm copper pipe to the wall eg

    4) this converter (possibly left chrome possible sprayed copper)

    5) recessed into the wall, normal diameter (32?) plastic solvent weld pipe eg

Plumbing is nearly as fun as bicycles for standards

  • Critique my build pls

  • I feel I need to redo my whole house now.

  • I presume pumps are a thing for toilets which are below exterior waste pipe levels? A quick google says 'macerator'.

    Are they hell?

Should I just excavate the side return by a matching amount so the relative height stays the same? Will that cause my house to fall over?

  • Aye they are called saniflos, they work but break and are fuckin shit.

There is a pro version which is about 3 x the price that are apparently better but I’ve never fitted one!
