I haven't got a tandem at the moment but I don't think you'll find it hard to find one that works with your respective sizes.
I don't disagree with your conclusion about buying one rather than renting though, as long as you are happy to do the work that is normally required to get a cheap tandem in good enough shape to handle a tour.
What is much harder is getting one where the two riders are similar size or, as is the case when I ride with a blind friend, the stoker is bigger.

I wonder if the awesome @6pt and @tricitybendix might be willing to help. Near you ish in Froome I believe.

Probably too far from you but we're 6'2 / 5'4, and you're welcome to borrow our Orbit for your trip, it's not being used atm. Not as nice as @6pt 's one, and not currently set with drops (also has kiddy cranks), but with a bit of prep you'd be fine I suppose.
Might be pushing it but is anybody here based near Bristol and has a tandem that they’re willing and able to let two tandem novices have a go on for a test ride?
Planning on doing a tandem cycle tour for a holiday but want to give it a go first - partly because we’re quite different in experience levels when it comes to cycling but also height (I’m 6’3 she’s 5’3). Figure it might be easier to look out for a tandem on the cheap here and take over to Europe than rent abroad given our comedy couple proportions.
