While asking myself the same question I found this "Get the most out of your canti brake". Sounds all like reasonable advice. I ended up buying CR720s but haven't tested them yet.

Sweet. Appreciate everyone's recomendations thanks. Im going to go with cr720 and some thinline decent pads with my sram s500 levers.
Happy New Year all.

I recently replaced ancient suntour cantis with avid shorty ultimate - they work nice =]

I canny get on with these modern v brake pad cantis.
I have some of one of the lower tier Avid Shorty and just don't find them very powerful. I tried some clear sticky trials pads in them but that just made them howl.
I must be doing something wrong as they seem popular on here.

Stopping power and modulation depend not only on the brakes or their set-up, but also the mechanical advantage of the levers used. Some combinations work better than others.
@Jonny69
Dia compe 289 were canti - specific road levers, Campag also offered modified last-gen C-record levers for that purpose.Note the lever pivot location, second pair of levers is canti - specific:

I've just received some salmon thin lines and MTBs. Interested to know of either are better than Swiss stop bxp that I've used before.

Massive dredge to get to hive wisdom, and probably a question more suited to retro bike but, recommendations for cantis to fit narrow spaced mounts please. Fork is ~60mm, rear is ~50mm which is narrow even by narrow standards.
Mafac? Shimano XT 'Dear Head' MC70? I've read that people have had success with CX50 and CX70 too.
Less importantly is anything workable available in black?
My canti set-ups are from the 90s, so probably of little use to OP.
Sticking with components which were designed to be used together would be my best bet.
So - Campag v2 ergos and SS knock-offs (Cane Creek SCR-5, Tektro RL200) and Campag CX Cantis/Tektro CR720.
Likewise, Sram S500 should be a good fit for shorty ultimates.
