  • We've got a concrete covered staircase leading from the kitchen to a sort of flimsy utility room at the end of the house. It's 3 or 4 stairs up into the room which is a mould trap with thin plasterboard walls. No idea what's behind the plasterboard but there are electrics in there and they're not wet so presume there's some kind of outer shell before we hit the earth.

I want to get rid of the steps/floor so it's the same height/level as the kitchen.

This is to free up useable space in the utility room, feel better/ safer moving between rooms and best of all I can then lower the decking above it (house is on a steep hill and the decked outside area is above this utility room which was added at a different time to the rest of the house).

It feels like removing the floor is the place to start.

Who would I speak to first? Structural engineer to check it's even possible?

Annoying considerations would be the side return which is tiered and at that end of the house it's at the same height as the current utility floor. There's a small toilet/sink in there so presume these would need to be lowered to the new floor (probably 60cm total height removal) and not sure how drainage would work. Also washing machine etc. would we need to lower the height of the side return as well?
