If you want a friendly welcome, go to Kiev wearing an 'I Love Putin' t shirt rather than setting foot in Swanley. I would say avoid it like the plague, but the plague would be preferable.
The pubs in the valley have pretty much all gone over to catering for visitors. For instance, the Samuel Palmer in Shoreham was recently The George, which was a proper boozer, it is still OKish. The nearest thing to a proper pub in Shoreham is The Crown.
I used to live in the valley and still visit most weeks, but now with a fishing rod not a bike.
Cheers! Knockholt loses out to stations on the line that runs from my local station (so Shoreham/Eynsford/Swanley) - looking for a ~3 hour walk total, with a pub somewhere in between, and ideally running a>b (rather than a loop). Currently looking at following the Darent Valley Path from Shoreham to Swanley with lunch at the Malt Shovel in Eysnford. Any deviations/improvements/alternatives/must-sees to add to that would be much appreciated!
