    He said it went from 30 to 50 and he went to change into 3rd and lost control. Which says to me that he was at or approaching 50mph in second gear which yeah isn't wringing it but not exactly feathering it for wet weather either.

    It's difficult to understand how the rear tyres are UK road legal but, apparently, they are. So you've been driving through a town at the 30 mph speed limit in the wet with 'normal' tyres on the front and semi slick track tyres on the rear (presumably now at below their optimal operating temperature?). You give it some throttle well before the 50 mph sign on an empty road and then change up - what could possibly go wrong?
