I need some 284mm spokes. I have 16 in the parts bin. If I use 16 284s and 4 286s I probably won't die right?

As long as you don't run out of thread on the long ones you should be fine. Only other possible issue is if you're using a poxy single-walled rim, they might want to poke into your tube.
