Have any of you paired a GX 2.1 rear derailleur to SRAM 11 road shifters to achieve 2x11 with an 11-36t cassette?

I have Rival1 group, but I would prefer the increased range of 2x. So, by getting a left/front shift lever, a GX2.1 derailleur, and a cassette I should be able to get the range I'm looking for (with a clutched derailleur) for under 200ish.

Currently installed are 5700 shifters, Praxis 48/32 crank, XT derailleurs, and 11-36 10sp. It all shifts really nicely for the most part, but I'm not aware of any derailleurs with a clutch that share the 1.7:1 movement ratio of the 8/9/10 Shimano (non-dynasys) derailleurs.

I'm trying to be cheap, and I know that if I just sold off some of my parts bin, I could go full GRX or similar.

  • Yes, that will work. Have run gx rear mech with sram 2x11 and 46/30 x 11-40t

The left hand shifters are still super cheap on Planet X fyi

  • Thanks. Ordered.

I've been meaning to pick up the left shifter regardless of whether the GX would work.

Even though I'm in the states and had to pay shipping, that planet x discount saved me probably $20 over the cheapest new left shifter I've found over here. Next, cassette.

  • Update, left shifter nearly made it to me but didn't complete delivery. Should be here tomorrow. Bike currently sports a bodgey downtube situation until I mount the shifter.

Otherwise, SRAM 10 and 11 speed road shifters both pull the same amount per click, the 11s just 'go to eleven'. Here we see the Rival shifter moving a GX 2.1 10sp RD across an 11-36 cassette. It works as if meant for eachother, which is more than I would say for other mismatched groups that I've put together.

Overall very satisfied to have a 2x10 with good range and a clutched rear derailleur without having to fork over lots of money for a whole new groupset.
