Which Groupset?

  • I would assume all are getting it for the same price

Retailers will have their own pricing based on how much they order so LBS will never be able to compete with online retailers on pricing without making much less profit

  • Merlin will be buying from the Taiwan factory gate.
A years ago I had a copy of the dollar priced SRAM/Zipp spreadsheet from a UK bike brand and the prices were an eye opener.
Merlin still do a few of their own MTB/Gravel frames so I would imagine each container is mostly groupset parts and a few token frames.

  • You'd get the capacity but the geometry of the derailleur will remain the same, it may not work with big ass cassettes anyways

  • Only looking to get 32/34t rear cassette range. Which is fine with a regular none adapted Wifli rear mech (Rival)...Im just looking to get a Force/red Wifli for next to nothing lol

  • I think if you're trying to put a longer cage on a force 22 short cage RD, the drivetrain capacity will increase, but the deraillieur body will still be rated to 28t, like Netakure says. The max tooth ratings are normally conservative though, so whether the short cage one could actually manage 32t anyway, I don't know.

Let me know if you're getting rid of a wifli rival mech though, I'm after a long cage one!

  • Yeah what I was trying to understand is if the body capacity would take on the extra few teeth.

Wifli red are mega bucks but short cages go for not much money....then add on a cage from a broken / parts derailleur and you may be onto a winner winner

  • Are you using 11 speed mechanical SRAM? Not sure if it'll mix with road, but I have a spare Force 1 medium cage mech that'll do 36T+ if youre interested? Happy to do a deal..

  • I know its an etap one so different body, but looks like some 28 rated srams clear 32... Only one way to find out I guess

  • Im running Sram but want a 2x10 set up with 32/34 rear and 46/34 up front. Hence the trying to get an upgrade on the Rival Wifli.

  • Yep this 105 is some OEM stuff with STI pre-cabled and hoses pre- installed in the brakes and the STIs and brakes L+R all in one box. BB is the only thing in retail packaging.

  • I got short cage red in the rear. Capacity is fine because I have 53/39 but it rubs if I go 53 front 32 rear. A longer cage would do nothing in my situation, but different bikes have different hangers, yours may clear it or get stuck in a 30

  • Cheers for the info, it confirms my suspicion that the wifli mechs have a longer body to allow for capacity.

  • (Edited to add photos of current grungy drivetrain)

Have any of you paired a GX 2.1 rear derailleur to SRAM 11 road shifters to achieve 2x11 with an 11-36t cassette?

I have Rival1 group, but I would prefer the increased range of 2x. So, by getting a left/front shift lever, a GX2.1 derailleur, and a cassette I should be able to get the range I'm looking for (with a clutched derailleur) for under 200ish.

Currently installed are 5700 shifters, Praxis 48/32 crank, XT derailleurs, and 11-36 10sp. It all shifts really nicely for the most part, but I'm not aware of any derailleurs with a clutch that share the 1.7:1 movement ratio of the 8/9/10 Shimano (non-dynasys) derailleurs.

I'm trying to be cheap, and I know that if I just sold off some of my parts bin, I could go full GRX or similar.

  • Yes, that will work. Have run gx rear mech with sram 2x11 and 46/30 x 11-40t

The left hand shifters are still super cheap on Planet X fyi

  • Thanks. Ordered.

I've been meaning to pick up the left shifter regardless of whether the GX would work.

Even though I'm in the states and had to pay shipping, that planet x discount saved me probably $20 over the cheapest new left shifter I've found over here. Next, cassette.

  • I have SRAM please don’t judge me.
Rival shifters, force calipers, with apex cranks and rear derailleur. I also have access to a set of rival cranks. Is there any tangible difference between them in the real world? It’s a 10minute job to swap them over, but in that 10minutes I could eat a pie would that be a better use of my time?

  • questionz :
which shimano left hand 2-speed flatbar shifter to run with a front road derailleur, say r7000 ?

  • Update, left shifter nearly made it to me but didn't complete delivery. Should be here tomorrow. Bike currently sports a bodgey downtube situation until I mount the shifter.

Otherwise, SRAM 10 and 11 speed road shifters both pull the same amount per click, the 11s just 'go to eleven'. Here we see the Rival shifter moving a GX 2.1 10sp RD across an 11-36 cassette. It works as if meant for eachother, which is more than I would say for other mismatched groups that I've put together.

Overall very satisfied to have a 2x10 with good range and a clutched rear derailleur without having to fork over lots of money for a whole new groupset.

  • Some really nice looking groups on that display, and then there's AX. Shimano was high when they did that one.

Also, yes to bringing back gum hoods. Also silver groups.

I really should put my 7700 group on a worth frameset.

  • I think AX looks pretty nice, funny pedal threads aside

  • Late to the party but just upgraded from sram 2x11 to GRX 2x12. Super smooth, super quiet, super precise once dialled in, one or two finger shifting and braking from the hoods (even on the front derailleur).

The shape feels more square than SRAM, and I haven’t found a sweet spot for comfort in it yet.

  • Perhaps I'm being too harsh, because you're right. Some of it really does look pretty nice and was an interesting departure aesthetic from classic to smother and "aero".

  • You can see a lot of the AX styling in the first C-Record. The platform pedal shape, the aero seatpost, and Delta brakes with hidden cables.

  • Have had 12 speed 105 on my winter steel bike for last month and echo everything here. The last mechanical Shimano group I've had from brand new was 6700 and that feels absolutely agricultural in comparison.
