• Things I wished I’d known or done differently;
    Don’t try to tie small bits of old wall into the new bits. Just knock them down and start again. It’s cheaper and will look better.
    Don’t build big just because you can. A smaller well thought out space is nicer than a large what’s that for space. If you can’t immediately say what that bit is for, you don’t need it.
    Don’t leave the kitchen/bathroom/boiler or whatever where they are just because that’s where they are. Plan the space from the ground up. I wish we’d moved the kitchen and bathroom to the centre of our old end terrace and not left them at the rear.
    Remember to leave some money for landscaping.
    Oh and you don’t need an architect to take a few walls out and put a box on the back of your house.
