  • (Joking a bit but) As someone that did do research each year to keep my insurance prices down I'm mildly annoyed that insurance companies can't just bump the prices for the loyal/lazy as it now makes my prices (as a diligent checker) go up.

  • Yeah get quotes a month before means you pay less

  • There is insurance logic, had a mate on a forum who was a broker and he explained it all.

    Makes fuck all sense.

  • Suspected the snowflake call may have been in jest, but rant was triggered nevertheless

  • They do still bump prices for loyal customers. Evil cunts.

  • I actually don't understand this... My (building) insurance has gone up almost 50%. Nothing's changed about my situation. Are they not supposed to do it?

  • there was a cartoon in a newspaper about the annual call to your insurance company where they send you a ridiculous renewal quote, you threaten to leave, they pretend there's some special discount they can offer you that 'accidentally' wasn't included in the original quote and you come back to a price just above what you paid last year.

i then had an almost word for word replica of this call with my insurer 2 days after seeing the cartoon.

    Insurance is a scam

  • Virgin Media was the same when i renewed this week #csb

  • In theory they can't charge you more than they would charge a new customer with the same circumstances. In reality that still leaves them with a bit of wiggle room to overcharge you.

  • I renewed my home insurance last year. Massive price hike including mandatory insurance on stuff we don’t have.
LV said it was non-negotiable. I spent 40 minutes banging my head against a wall explaining that every contract ever written was negotiable.
I then asked to be put through to claims, said I didn’t have a claim but I would like to negotiate my renewal. They negotiated. The renewal price was £30 higher than the previous year rather than the initial £300

  • I insured my new work vehicle through the guy that sorted out my car finance, got a quote of $2k+ from my insurer, his quote with the same company came back less than half that. Their preferential rate, he said, it is a fucking scam. I'm going back to him for all my insurance now.

  • Restaurants that have a telephone number for bookings on thier websites that, when called, default to a message telling you to book via the website.

    I'm looking at you, Rocksalt.

  • Ha, there’s a place near us that has a big old pink telephone on the counter, which also features throughout their website and contact page, but you can’t call them

  • It's not compulsory to drive

  • Motornormativity makes it difficult for many not to. Huge and uncomfortable change is required to enable more to not default to car.

  • Maybe higher insurance prices can nudge people into looking for alternatives.

  • If you choose to drive a car, insurance is compulsory.

I might be an idealistic sort, but at no point in the near future is the use of cars going to voluntarily stop

Anyway, the comment you replied to is nothing to do with car ownership, it's about the insurance industry and how i think nationalising compulsory forms of insurance is an idea.

  • What @sohi said. More barriers to driving, not less.

  • nationalising compulsory forms of insurance

If you mean I can buy my 3rd party car insurance from the state rather than a for profit company then fair enough. I don't like the Australian include it in your vehicle registration fee system.

  • That's just third party, makes perfect sense to me.

  • I'm not sure why I'd want to buy 3rd party from StateInsuranceLtd and comprehensive from ForProfitInsurancePlc. 2 transactions rather than 1 doesn't fill me with glee not to mention the possible extra paperwork when claiming and it is split.

I can already buy my insurance from a mutual if I don't want to make profit for someone else.

  • I think basic 3rd party insurance could be included with your VED. I also think there shouldn’t be any free VED vehicles as they still put a drain on the public purse. You should also have to pay 20% tax on the electric you use to charge you car up. You should not be able to fill your car up at a fuel stop unless it is has valid VED (number plate recognition?)
    The list goes on.

  • You should also have to pay 20% tax on the electric you use to charge you car up.

Difficult to measure for the people that have solar panels or something. Easier to ditch fuel duty for everyone and replace it with road pricing.

  • Motor vehicle insurance is run by the province where I live, Manitoba. It is much better than any privately run insurance, it’s cheaper and the revenue stays in Manitoba instead of going into an American millionaire’s pocket.
