I have no experience of it whatsoever, but I imagine it’s one of the hardest ways in the UK (or any country without slave labour) to convert work done into living.
Having said all this, if you know how house numbers work you could be Deliveroo CEO.

The two people I know who do it to "make a living" have already paid off their mortgage.

I want to frame this
https://shop.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/mars-western-arabia-terra-limited-edition/Due to its massive size it's hard to find relatively cheap options. I have a decent saw and a mitre - I'm not an idiot. Is it reasonable to assume I can make a frame myself?

This sounds like when someone was planning on making their own garage doors. Good picture framers are not very common, like many skills you could probably do a reasonable job yourself. However I assume there are tricks to the trade which will result in a better job and being done faster.

Very good point. I'm not after fast though, it's been sat in a tube for 3 years now 😄

3672x2721km
That is pretty big.

Yes. Give it a go. I've been making frames for a while. Careful measurement of length and angles and you'll be ok.
You might want to router a channel into the back for whatever backing you want to use.

I think it's the design X materials which will dictate whether you can do it yourself.
If you're happy with a chunky wood frame, then you'll be fine. I think the problem comes when you want something slimmer and require stronger materials which don't flex or warp over the larger distance.

Don't use pine like that one though. Get some decent wood.
-
• #121511
Pine is fine, but I learned recently if you want pine with nice, regular, straight grain like it always used to have, you need to get it quarter sawn. There are also better grades of pine from older, slower-growing trees which are less soft and the grain is closer. I forget which pines are which, but the stuff you get in DIY places and most wood yards is the cheap shit. And it is shit. It’s barely dried, full of knots and it’s plain sawn, so it’s just begging to warp.

I seem to recall I paid ~£90.00 to have the same print framed four or five years ago.

Might be easier just to get a massive piece of perspex and make my own clip-frame...?
-
• #121514
Framing is one of those things that I've always thought about trying myself due to the prices I've paid for bespoke frames over the years.
Obviously it must be just what it costs to make the things (and keep the stock, tools, premises, time, labour, profit etc) as it's unlikely there's some grand framers cartel (tinfc) where they collude to fix the prices and all laugh at the public for paying so much and funding their tropical island purchases.

Do you mean they were mortage free when they started? ie low overheads?
-
• #121516
No, they "retired" into it once they'd paid things off with years of "normal" work.
One example is renowned Audaxer Steve A. He'd worked a warehouse job for ~20 years and paid off his mortgage, then tried to get the HAMR record (most distance cycled in a year, attempted 3 times) and has settled on various gig economy jobs (food delivery, swapping electric bike batteries, etc).

I have a map that’s been in a tube for nearly 20 years now…

A tube map?

Tube map in a tube? What is this dawg?

massive piece of perspex
Depends where you hang it, but you might get a lot of glare/reflection and not be able to see the map so well.
Bonus pic - art put into in a charity shop frame. I don't generally bother with glass/perspex. Looks ok to me.

Anyone ever taken a taxi from Preston to Blackpool? If so, how long did it take and how much did you have to pay?

Corner clamps / frame clamps are available at a variety of outlets for a variety of prices - Lidl usually have them once a year at least. They will make your job much easier.
However, if you want picture framing glass you will have to buy that from a picture framer, and if you want anti reflective glass it will be pricey, so why not give them the job of framing it while you are there - plus you don't have to worry about getting a large, thin, expensive piece of glass home on it's own.
Alternatively, A0 is 841 x 1189 mm, which is only 200 mm longer than your map, so you could just buy an off the peg clip frame and throw it in, with a large bottom border.

My first option for that would be the train. If it's because the trains are knackered (think they might be this weekend on some routes) then it's about half an hour and probably (although I may be out of date) about thirty quid.
Pretty sure Preston has Uber so you can have a check on there.

This is an easy option - a sheet of backing board, perspex, a mount if you want it and four of these https://www.tcfixings.co.uk/category/l-hooks/804
A frame will look better though and protect the map

My girlfriend has some interesting, but out of date stories of trips in the other direction.
People with recent food app delivery rider experience, would you recomend it as a way to make a living?
