  • Evans Cycles replaced mine for £20, that was in 2022 though!

  • fwiw I had a wornout sleeve but even after replacement had slipping issues, so decided I was made of money & got this from eerdermetaal. now it really really does not slip (altho the fold is a bit slower…)

  • Good shout. My LBS warned me when I was a Brompton n00b as if done that nut up quite a bit. But even after replacing my shim and seatpost, it slipped quite easily, so had to do a few 1/8th turns to get it right.

  • It could also be the plastic handle had worn away and when you close the seat collar it’s only half closing. Pretty common for the metal nut to wear away the plastic

  • Oh dear ...

  • Oh shit, hadn’t seen that went into the braze, guess I’m yet another warning to you all to change your sleeves before you fuck your frame….

  • (Triggered mechanic noises)
    ((Condolences on your bike))

  • Ouch. Well spotted. =(

    But seriously, 96 tabs?!

  • @cornelius_blackfoot send a photo from 45degree angle looking down at the back of the seat clamp / sleeve / post

  • Ha! Yes, my reading list...

  • Is there a go to EZ wheel kit from the after market? Brompton genuine parts a bit few and far between here in NZ.

Also are they actually lower profile and they stop you shredding your ankles? Asking for a friend

  • Quite a few others do them Bromptification etc.

As for it catching, you'll either have to adjust your foot position and get used to it, was the case for me.

Otherwise, you could get a pedal axle extender which should push it out a bit.

  • I rate the Joseph Kousac ones (no idea if available in NZ!), and find they are both larger diameter (better rolling) and narrower in width which gives that little bit of extra space for your shoes/heals. I think SON do a very similar set which might be more widely available through SON dealers?

  • Surprisingly, the local options appear to be standard brompton ones for 25gbp or order from overseas

    Are the brompton ones ok?

  • If I put a 50mm riser on a newish M-type, would that make the bars roughly in the same place as S-type? It's only pre-2017 M-type that had a shorter reach stem as well as lower height right?

  • To part answer my own question, because I couldn't find any info online at all, I just measured.
A post 2017 M-type stem has the same reach as as the S-type at 220mm from the front axle. Not the 251mm the M-type used to have pre-2017:

I've also measured the height from the ground of the clamp and it comes out around 92cm so it's either exactly the same stem or very close.
So I'm going to go ahead and flar bar swap. Or possibly slight riser.

  • Hello @PhilDAS I don't know the answer to your question but when I went from M to S, I had to replace the stem. I suspect because mine is a pre2017 bike.

If it is so close you may not have to play with the cables, but check it folds and unfolds!

  • Would like a pair of brakes, tyre and rear suspension block. Cheap as possible as I'm skint, the Brompton I took to France to sell was stolen. So need to get my old Brompton able to use.
Who, in London can do a rear pin swap as I have a replacement triangle for mine.

  • I have a used hard block, new contact Urbans, and can do the triangle in SE24. Drop me a dm.

  • Sorry to hear. Happy to donate some original Brompton tires to lessen the blow. I might just have a used suspension block too. East London massive here.

  • Don't mind me asking, what happened?

  • I have discovered a rather large amount of vertical play in the main hinge between the two frame halves, I'd guess 0.5-1mm - it's almost like the "ears" for the hinge have spread somehow. The bike is ~1.5 years old, been well looked after / not been dropped / crashed etc - kept clean and lubricated. I think this is the source of creaking I have been trying to get to the bottom of.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? What would be the solution - I am going to head into Brompton Junction after work today.

  • Bikes come new with this, as long as when the hinge plate is snug there is no play, it’s fine.
