Well you'd need to knock the box out, re board it and then tile it. And unless you tiled the whole walls you'd be able to see it existed.
Yes bottom row off, use something to make a fall. Not sure what would be best, fall doesn't need to be big. Good shower niche fall.
That coping can't be stainless steel as it's rusting. Might be worth replacing that with something better, if it'll come off easily.
