  • Some advice please...
My friends and I are going to a gig in Eindhoven in May and are planning to get the ferry from the Harwich to the Hook and then cycling down to Eindhoven. Does anyone have a route that we can follow? Direct (ish) with the possibility of stopping overnight somewhere (say Oosterhout or Tilburg).

  • Nice! What gig? In Effenaar? From Hoek van Holland to Eindhoven is about 135km (shortest) or 165 (scenic)

I can very much recommend the fietsersbond (cyclists' union) route planner for A-to-B routes, there's many options to choose from (yes/no ferries, yes/no off road, most direct or scenic route, etc.). Also, you can add stops along the way to include in the route.

It's excellent, and there's even an English language version! Click on 'more options' and play around with the criteria, you'll see:

  • It's NOFX at the Ketelhuisplein.
I did see the fietsersbond route planner after I posted and have used that to create a route. It's an excellent app as you say!

  • ah that's a right blast from the past... have fun in Eindhoven Rock City

  • I've got a week in NL at the end of March, staying in Arnhem for first 4 days before going to Amsterdam for the 12 hour alleycat on the 30th. So I got an idea to try get some audax type riding in and doing an overnight 200 when based in Arnhem. I love riding all day, so all night must be just as good! The easy option would be to ride to Essen or Dusseldorf along the Rhine? I landed on this idea when trying to find what shops are open 24hours in nl. Seems there aren't any? Closest shops are in Germany apparently so seemed like the sensible option.
And about the fietsbond route planner, if you not in a hurry, the recreation route option comes up with excellent rides every time I've used that.

  • Most 'night' shops in NL are in cities and close at 2AM, so yes maybe you'll have better options in Germany

  • Can confirm that night riding is just as good as the daytime in NL, albeit with a bit more concern for if anything were to go wrong. Staying in Arnhem was excellent with many options for getting to some great places. I overnighted along a bit of Eurovelo 15 route to Duisberg, through some very isolated areas with a cold tail wind. Only the third 24h shop I got to once in Germany was actually open. Then a highlight of the trip, getting to
the deserted Landschaftspark in Duisberg at sunrise, incredible, kind of place that really sticks in one's head after. Post apocalyptic steam punk with nature just starting to re colonise
The national park north east of Arnhem, Veluvezoom, is a cycling playground. Has the perfect infrastructure of the Netherlands, but in nature and with gentle rolling hills with no one to be seen for miles. A variety of surfaces, all exceptionally good. Only thing I would have done differently would have been to have stayed a bit longer in Arnhem.

  • Great pics! Veluwe is lovely indeed. I'm now planning a tour to Duisburg Landschaftspark :)

  • Oh, does anyone has a link to a nice Amsterdam > Veluwe > Amsterdam route?

  • This route goes through a lot of the nicest areas between the two, it’s mixed surface, but you could create a shorter or tarmac-only version quite easily:

  • Thanks, quite the detour but worth bookmarking for a future ride
