Would they try to reunite it with owner? I'm probably just going to stick it in recyc.

I just googled it and apparently they don't accept them anymore, they'll just tell you to take it to the police. The other tip I found when googling is that you can ask Siri "who owns this phone". Might be helpful if the screen is broken
