  • In fact seeing the bike park with your lad the Jeht might be the better option

    For example

  • How much faster/more efficient is 29er v 27.5 over long distances in the real world?

Basically I'm torn on whether it's worth buying new wheels (and probably upgrade to 12 speed) for a couple of super long rides this year (SDW and Carigorms Loop). I don't care about precious seconds, but if it's going to make something very difficult slightly less so...

Alternatively money could be spent on a PM for the roadbike, cos, training.

  • My Tallboy...

I'm being serious, for once. Tallboy CC, XXL. I'm 6ft 4. You're 6ft 4. It could not be more perfect if I named it after you.

  • I wouldn't buy either.

29 is good for getting over rocks etc but for a glorified gravel grinder 27.5 is fine.

And unless your pro don't bother with a PM.

Bang the money into a new bike in a year or so.

  • Lovely
    Nowhere near £2k though surely?!

  • @Tallboy they were selling nukeproof reaktor (sp?) with amazing spec on crc in january for 2k. it’s the kind of bike i’d go for, maybe someone out there is selling there’s?

  • Yeh I regret not getting one now but it was so wet this winter I couldn’t think about Mtb!

  • Thinking secondhand and coming up with Transition Spur or YT Izzo (off the top of my head as the kind of short-travel FS I think about on the offchance I stop living in the south east). Thinking new prices... Canyon Neuron 6? (The spec bump compared to the 5 is decent / why pay for Recons).

(That Jeht on PB is tasty tho)

  • Don’t suppose anyone on here has a Endura MT500 helmet?

Got a spare set of pads (never used) and a GoPro mount for one if anyone wants them?

  • I want to pack my new Cannondale Slate into my Evoc bag to get it home- challenge is it has a Lefty. My current solution to this is lots of Zip ties, but is there a better way of securing the fork to the Evoc frame?

  • Anyone own a Whyte 905 V5? Verdict?

  • Any advice on this? There is a bargain on the 905, and I want to start MTBing with my eldest son, but I don't really know anything about them.

  • It's quite an aggressive hardtail. More set up for UK bike parks rather than XC miles. Do you know what components are on it? They will make a huge difference to how good a bike it is.

  • With 27.5 x 2.8" tyres and that slack headtube angle it will definitely be sluggish to pedal around. A lot of people find that plus tyres are nice on a hardtail for adding a bit more cushion, but in deep mud they can float rather than cut through, so can feel a bit slippery.
You might want to upgrade the Guide brakes and NX drivetrain at some point but for the money, they're not bad.
If you're after a hardtail that will descend well in good conditions and aren't fussed about long XC rides, then you could do a lot worse.
Bikeradar did a comparison with a Ragley: https://www.bikeradar.com/features/tech/hardcore-hardtail-head-to-head-ragley-mmmbop-1-0-vs-whyte-905

  • I have a parts-bin build around a 909 frame from a couple of years ago, the silver one with silver Pikes. The slack HT angle does make it a bit of a pain for distance, I've used it once on a group gravel ride (in winter, MTB is best) and I was very aware of being on a less efficient bike than usual.

Usually I just ride it at Peaslake, and I'd say its absolutely perfect for that. No more bike than I need, and I'm a casual MTBer at best so I'm not going to Fort Bill any time soon.

  • thanks both!

  • These Rocky Mountain hardtails at Pauls look like pretty good value for space year 2024 where a mid-level CF bike costs £6k.

  • Thanks. That looks like a lot of bike for the price. Forgive my noob questions, but is that drivetrain spec decent?

  • It's Shimano's Ultegra equivalent MTB drivetrain.

  • On the wheel size chat, my rigid bike on 27,5 plus (3.0 and 3.25 so really quite fat) is a bike you don't want to go touring on.
On light 29 x 2.6 you want to go touring.

  • Beware on the Rocky mountain that it has an XT derailleur (nice) but SLX shifter and SunRace cassette, (not so nice). The fork (RS 35) is also not as good as the Pike. Fine for casual stuff but doesn't have the adjustability and plushness that a Pike will.
