  • Yes, we painted the end of a stub wall in our last house with red chalkboard paint and it was ace for shopping lists and random doodling.

  • Yes

Oh dear, bad news. That’s definitely not going to resolve itself anytime soon.

  • I find Portuguese olive oil to be consistently cheaper than the well known sources.

  • I prefer my olive oil to be cold pressed in a walk in, from my olive groves, whom I call she. I use child labour to ensure everyone is a virgin, so from the picking, pressing bottling I can call the oil extra special virgin.

Also get the local Roman Catholic priest to check the childrens virginity and bless every part of the process so I can sell the blessed, super extra special virgin oil.

This oil is then used in all church anointments in at least a 500km area.

  • Is the effectivity of a magnet only changed by distance or by the intermediate medium (air, wood, tile etc) too?

I want to stick a soap holder to a wall with a magnet hidden behind a tile, but want to know it is going to work beforehand. I dont have a spare tile, but could replicate the distance in MDF)

  • Fucking magnets, how do they work?

The attraction force is directly proportional to the magnetic permeability μ of the material in the gap. Fortunately, the values for air, wood, common plastics & concrete are all so close to equal to that of a vacuum that you can disregard them for your purposes.

  • It’s usually only metals that block magnetic fields. A ceramic tile shouldn’t do it, so it’ll just be the distance. MDF ought to be the same, or if you want to test it for real don’t forget most DIY places sell single tester tiles that they expect you to take back for a refund 👍

  • Our bathroom bog roll holder is held with screws and still gets dislodged, the soap dish in the shower is held with a sort of mega suction cup and still slides down

Not sure a magnet will cut the mustard?

  • Surely it just depends on the size of the magnet ...

  • I think 4 x neodymium magnets will be enough. Will test and report back.

  • I have 5 doors from a refurb of our house. They are solid pine, maybe 1900s/10 vintage.

Is there anywhere in NE london that would buy them, or should I just lob them in the local refuse centre?

  • They have resale value - don’t bin them.

  • How much resale value, because I have 5 in SE London 🤗

    [obviously buy @doubleodavey’s first]

  • Are there any decent websites that show EV charging stations? Ideally I want to be able to plan a route, pop the range of the EV in and have someone tell me where to charge it on the way.

  • Zipcar usually points people at https://www.zap-map.com/ ?

  • I've tried that one and got so frustrated that I thought I'd ask for alternatives, haha. Apparently there's only one place to charge an EV between London and Manchester.
I only used the desktop version to be fair, it seems like it's probably more geared towards the app.

  • A Better Route Planner ABRP is ok for planning routes
Zapmap is ok for charger locations but the pricing info is usually wrong

  • Bear in mind the speed you drive at has an enormous effect on range -20% if you are speeding. Very strong headwinds and running the heating/aircon reduce range appreciably.
I try to have a few options worked out if I’m travelling with family and dog.

  • Found an iphone.

Screen is smashed. It has some level of function because if I hold down all the buttons I can feel the haptic feedback and then some kind of alarm sounds.

Any way I can access info on it to find an owner or whatever?

  • Google maps search "EV charging" kind of works?

  • Apparently there's only one place to charge an EV between London and Manchester.

There's a problem with your browser then. I see hundreds even when filtering out the slow chargers (<22kW):

  • Thanks everyone! I'll look in to all of those options.

  • Whilst I'm here, my hearing is shagged recently. Are the free tests from Boots/Specsavers any good or should I just throw myself at the mercy of my rubbish GP practice?
