Is the effectivity of a magnet only changed by distance or by the intermediate medium (air, wood, tile etc) too?
I want to stick a soap holder to a wall with a magnet hidden behind a tile, but want to know it is going to work beforehand. I dont have a spare tile, but could replicate the distance in MDF)
The attraction force is directly proportional to the magnetic permeability μ of the material in the gap. Fortunately, the values for air, wood, common plastics & concrete are all so close to equal to that of a vacuum that you can disregard them for your purposes.
It’s usually only metals that block magnetic fields. A ceramic tile shouldn’t do it, so it’ll just be the distance. MDF ought to be the same, or if you want to test it for real don’t forget most DIY places sell single tester tiles that they expect you to take back for a refund 👍
