  • A friend was kind enough to do a mock-up of the tiling I will be having done next week. Was worried the metro tiles would be a bit too basic but they look okay to me.

  • If you're going to do any washing up get a double sink.

  • Here's my preferred layout

  • @cozey I absolutely love simplicty, well done. How are you finding worktop and what is it?

  • worktop is fenix-faced ply. it's... surprisingly resilient. can spill oils, wine etc on it with no issues so far (touch fenix)

we might add some upper cabinets above the sink/toaster at some point in the future for more storage but we have enough for now.

kitchen is also a wee bit messier/less simple since that pic was taken ; )

  • This is probably my favourite kitchen I've seen for a long time. So clean.

  • This is pretty much what happened when @ChainBreaker and I shared a house

We had at least one working bike between us too

  • Where's the fridge?

  • We should've probably taken more advantage of that

To be mostly single again with loads of bikes 😂

  • We've been struggling with our house renovation for a few months and truly taken to the cleaners by our 'builder'.

I've now been left with a 5m RSJ with plate that I need to shift. It's on eBay now, can I link to it here in case anyone wants it? Or is that against the rules? Probably not suitable for collection by bicycle!

  • Does this image work?

if it does, that was shortly after we moved in, this was Sunday last:

  • Does this image work?

    No.

  • Hmm.

  • same spot?

Or is it if you turn round you get one, then the other?!?! (i IZ smart)

  • Photos work for me. Any of the rest of the kitchen?

  • Oh open plan kitchen / bathroom / toilet -innovative (if not entirely compliant with building regs - damn those bureaucrats).

  • What do they know.

  • You drew my flat.

  • We want to gut our kitchen and replace everything. Where to start? Drawing stuff I guess?

Is anyone in the UK not a totally shit contractor when it comes to doing the work? I've heard nothing but problems with everyone who's paid people to do work.

We only have electric and I also want to improve the hot water situation - the little electric hot water heater isn't really up to snuff.

I want to get a smaller washing machine that integrates into the bottom cupboards for a cleaner look.

Also want to get top cupboards that go all the way to the roof instead of leaving dust space/clutter.

We don't have an extractor fan - I want one added, preferably venting out the existing vent hole, though this would need some ducting.

There's a cupboard where the old immersion heater stuff was that's now storage - remove or replace?

It would be cool to move the sink to under the window but that's on the other side of the kitchen - how much would it cost to move a bunch of pipes around? Probably more than I want to spend. I also want a gap above the sink so people taller than children don't bang their head while washing dishes (who designs this stuff?)

Literally no idea where to start though. Think the missus is going to draw stuff up and then we have to find someone that won't do a shit job - which seems impossible here.

  • DIY Kitchens was where I drew up (and eventually ordered) all our plans. You can have 2 different heights of top cupboards as well, 720 and 900mm (plus taller larder units if that's your thing) to get to the top of your ceiling... if you ceiling is straight, but you can order extra filler panels for your fitter to use if the ceiling isn't straight.

You can buy doors for integrated washing machines and dishwashers from there too.

I'm now up north and fitted my kitchen, plumbing, very minor electrics myself so no recommendations from me for LANDAN contractors.

Do recommend using Ikea Tradfri under cabinet lighting as you can hook it up to a sensor so they turn on when you walk in the room. Spent all the time and money hooking up the ceiling lights and only really use them when we clean the room...

  • Nice. We want to DIY the kitchen too. In a possibly odd move we're going to build it and relocate it in the next room then gut the existing small kitchen, sort out the damp uninsulated floor and leave it as a workshop/storage room. I guess this is one of those "forever home" rather than "resale value" moves.

  • So, we have some plans and stuff for a new kitchen. Waiting on a quote for the bits then we give that to the blokes that'll stick it in (ooh nurse).

The plumbing in ours is a mess though and I have a solution but I don't know if it's possible nor how much it will cost. We used to have an immersion heater and cold water tank in the cupboard, which has been replaced with a little electric hot water heater for the kitchen and bathroom taps.

For some reason, we have two water meters.

Can I get a plumber to remove all the pipes in the cupboard and along the wall, including the second water meter and relocate (a probably new) hot water heater thing under the kitchen sink, near the other existing water meter? Do you need to involve Thames Idiot Water if/when moving meters or can you just have it done and then let them know the meter is no longer needed because the plumbing has been consolidated?

Any idea what this lunacy might cost (ballpark, obvs)?
