This style of hinge (also Dahon) is also pretty good imo

here, have a photo.
the other cool thing about that bike was it had a coaster rear brake so less cables to get snagged or kinked.
I only got rid of it because it was too convenient to use rather than riding my full commute.

If we do folders with small wheels plus bouncy, birdy needs to be here. They ride quite nice and the suspension is also folding.
That said they are on the over engineered end of things, and your design is wayyy nicer to look at.

Here in Austria, there is Vello Bikes. They use a pivot around the bb area and interestingly a hinge on the fork. There is a gravel model available. Seems to make for a robust frame but I'd be sceptical about that fork.

These are quite nice and less ugly then the birdy. They do a full Ti option as well.

Thanks dudes.
We also managed to glue on some new UDH dropouts. These are a prototype but I think I'll go forward with them and have some laser cut. Slimmer and lighter.

Doesn't this create a weak point on the tube vs. the clamping method?
-
• #8838
when you say clamping method do you mean crimping?
I can't see this failing but this is my own bike so if it does I will know!

has anyone made a folder that used some kind of threaded sleeve over the join, a bit like S&S couplers?
or would the sleeve have to be weirdly massive to get some kind of hinge inside and be strong enough?
or could you then have the hinge as some kind of pivot-y bracket-y thing within/on the end of the main tubes which are covered by the sleeve? -

Pretty pleased with how this came out. Still got to do some work nailing the UDH dropout design and figure out the neatest way to do flat mounts brake mounts. The dropout design means the chainstays sit wider and therefore the placement of the brake mounts is a bit weird. I went for front flatmount style m5 bosses. But I will see if if can get something designed that use regular rear fm next time.

Ohh yeah and btw this in my personal 700x35 gravel bike. It will be in the hands of Carbel Colours later this week. Expecting it to come out something like this.

Somehow it reminds me of the cdale dropouts

It is totally what I was going for. That and their road bike dropouts which I always loved.
Appropriately the bike has track bike geometry :)

Could the dropouts be shaved down a bit closer to the UDH diameter?
Front flat mount is actually pretty neat for the rear because you can run either 140 or 160mm rotors with the same adapter. -

Yes. That's been the plan all along. Next time they will be laser cut and then everything is possible but because I shaped these by hand they ended up chunkier.

yeah that's what I meant. A local frame builder did this on a frame that later broke on the seat tube but I've not the technical background to know why honestly, maybe he was unlucky and it's a common practice

Well, I am an XXL kind of person so it will be tested!

Don't you think this will look better with a slightly shorter headtube and 1 or 2 spacers?

Are you hating the 0° stem?
I had a steel frame dahon speed uno for a while. the frame folding mechanism never gave me any concerns and was simple and quick to fold and unfold.
the handlebar folding mechanism wasn't quite as sturdy though and needed tightening every couple of weeks.
