redditors saying better than the PS4 port..
Damn haha, just give me a sequel already!

I'm probably a little late on this but I've been rinsing the hell out of R Type Final 2 recently. It's not perfect but it was such a huge part of my childhood and I'm so happy I get to deep dive on it. I've unlocked 100 of 101 ships, and I've no idea how to get the last one.

I keep buying versions of this, as I have such strong feelings for the original arcade r-type, despite being shit at it. And I've still not played the versions I've brought for the playstations I've owned through the years but I cant let it go..

Ha same. Gotta say the Playstation version is much more engaging (for me at least) than the various versions I have on mobile devices - it really encourages you to learn the stages to the level of perfection, which feels very on brand for R Type, and unlocking the ships is incredibly fun.

Ps5 version is on sale right now in the digital store for £25, sorely tempted. But I’ll wait. Have other games to play without purchasing another that just sits there waiting to be downloaded..

Totally get it. I bought Baldur's Gate and loved the story but found the combat so clunky I put it down and didn't come back to it. I'm going to need to go back to it just so I don't feel like I've wasted £60.

i've done the same.

wdym by clunky out of interest?
I've played a lot of tabletop dungeons and dragons 5e so the combat was very familiar to me, but I did have the feeling that for people who haven't it would feel very odd.

Yeah I don't think it was the turn based combat, which I quite like, so much as the complexity - there were too many different attack / defense options there were for each character, many unique, and how clunky the interface felt to get to them. Then combined with the fact that your characters can move or not move and I'm not clear if or how it helps. I don't feel I add much value to the combat, I'd prefer it if it just did the combat automatically.

Were you playing on console? Re interface being clunky. I played first time on pad and didn't find it too bad, but I guess there's a big difference between knowing what you want to do and finding it and needing to explore what you want to do.
And yeah, the large amount of options characters have, and not knowing what is good and what isn't, and how positioning effects those things is the kind of thing I thought people would struggle with. But I guess it's not really any different in other CRPGs I've played so maybe that's part of the genre.
The combat can be (imo) very tactical and interesting, and tense, but it does require you to know somewhat of the opponents' options and your own.
There was a joke I heard about Larian games that basically the entire first playthrough is the tutorial, and you only really know what you're doing on the second playthrough.

I've been out and spent £15 on WWE 2k22 and NBA 2k20 for my new Xbox one.
I have spent an enjoyable couple of hours pummeling my kids at WWE. Money well spent

Are you gonna mod the screen so it has a back light?
-
• #29215
I'd like to try that.

It’s definitely worth it.

If you end up with an SP I have a spare aftermarket case and probably some buttons I can offer for free.
-
• #29218
The exact one I bought on release day, why do you want that and not the SP? I think the SP is far superior.
-
• #29219
I currently have both SP (AGS 101 - the model with better backlight) and also have Gameboy Micro.
I’ve never owned the original Advance and would like to try it to compare to the other two models. -
• #29220
It's definitely more comfortable than those two. I want a micro...
The shoulder buttons don't have as much of a positive 'click' than my SP though
My SP case is still available to anyone that wants it, I think it's a clear model with a yellow tint

If anyone has an old PSP to sell I'm interested. I'd like a 1000 but anything other than a Go considered.
-
• #29222
Yeah I think this is exactly it - I was playing on PS5 and those character wheels are awkward to get to on stick. I imagine on keyboard it'd reward exploration.
I really love the story and the acting though. I reckon I might give it another bash today.

I think I do, got a couple of them but can't remember which models (one slidy one and one black one). Will have a look as I remember putting them somewhere but can't remember where
-
• #29224
It's definitely worth playing, and don't be shy to look up some character builds and party compositions if you don't know what's good.

I've been properly suckered into Mechwarrior 5 lately. After rinsing MW4 & Mercs for all they're worth as a kid I cannot believe it's taken me this long to get a copy. That perfect roguelike 'just one more mission' vibe but with the big stompy robots I love. Anyone else been playing it over the past four years of absolute ignorance on my part?
StS Board Game? lol full meta. Should be an interesting one.
