  • I’ve always been a both sides at the same time builder. I think building both sides simultaneously means you build asymmetrically and if you build one side at a time you build symmetrically…or vice versa? I’m sure I read in a wheel building book that you basically learn one way and tend to stick to it and that the differences in strength are so small it doesn’t really matter. That sounds like a good way to start an argument though!

Anyway, got my wheel done. Small hiccup at the start when I counted the wrong way around the hub flange to set the key spoke and I didn’t notice until it came to twisting the hub and the 2x spokes were reaching further than the 3x ones and the hub logo was way out! Easily rectified though and all worked out in the end.

I was taking the hub out of one rim and building into another and the two rims actually had the same erd so could have just done a straight swap but by the time I realised that I was invested in doing this two different crossings build!

    Cheers for the advice all.

  • Building one side at a time, symmetric & asymmetric are both easily possible as well as different crosses.

  • All this time building wheels could be spent sticking a disc mount on my mate's fork.

  • Building wheels can be done at work Disc mounts have to be done at home.

Actually that’s bullshit because I was intending on sizing up the mount getting it cut to size etc tomorrow at work and hopefully getting a lot of the prep work done there too so I can braze them up on Monday!

  • Im looking for Kinlin rd-3ft rims with 24 holes. Preferably a Eu seller, but really anywhere.

    ginkgo-veloteile.de only have 32h
the cycle clinic have 32h and 28h
    bitexhubs.co.uk have 32h and 28h

Has anyone seen rebranded versions. Halo?

  • 20h j-bend rear! Not too common I bet, although I have one in an American Classic wheel.

Might be better off looking for a 40h hub.

  • yes it's from/for a kids tag-along bike

  • Any wheel builders willing to share some expertise about internal width of rims?

Considering several options for a primarily "nice summer" road wheelset that I intend to run with 28mm GP5000s with inner tubes for now. The main bike I plan to use them on can take up to 32mm, though.

Potentially in the future I might want to fit some wider tyres and put them on the gravel bike. But definitely want to bias for road.

Options I'm looking at have either 21mm or 25mm internal widths. From online research, either will definitely be fine. What would you choose between those, and why? Would you pay a slight price premium for 25mm internal width, or not?

  • 21mm internal will be fine up to 35mm, over that and I would go for a wider rim. With a 25mm rim I wouldn't go below a 30mm tire.
Are you worried about aero gainz at all? When you say inner tubes for now, does that mean you are tubeless curious?

  • Thanks for a quick response! And good questions :)

Hmm yes, so maybe I'm asking too much of a single rim, and should stick with 21mm and keeping it as a road set. Why not below 30mm for 25mm rim, out of curiosity?

Nope, entirely not worried about aero gainz.

I love and use tubeless for gravel tyres. However, not at all curious for road. If we end up in a place in ~5 years where 32c is the norm for road, I'd probably explore tubeless at that point.

  • I would say if you want them to be a nice summer road wheelset then go for 21mm internal. They'll work well with 28 or 30mm tires and I don't think you'll ever (never say never) want bigger than that on a nice summer wheel.
If down the line you want gravel wheels then hopefully you'll have saved some money for something a bit burlier which you won't mind dragging through SFAB.

  • Have you ever ridden 28c tyre on a 25mm internal rim?

  • I have 25mm XC rims, road tires will be designed around smaller widths. Don't think it will make much a difference either way

  • Yes, a tubeless hookless one no less

  • Cycleclinic can get them in for you

  • What was it like? Compared to on 21mm rim?

  • A bit strange. The tire felt like it ended up with quite a flat profile so cornering felt less predictable. It did look very aero though.

I also have some 40mm tires mounted on a 21mm internal rim. It works fine, but the tire is quite ballooned.

  • Great, thanks, I will try that.

  • Thinking about a wheelset, will be gravelly width tyres, 35-40 ish. Wondering about rims: 32h rim brake 650B silver ... What are my options?

  • Halo vapour are available in 650b, silver, 32h. I'm not recommending them, although I've used the 29er version with no issues. Just that I recalled they were recently released in the silver version.

  • Cheers. Seem like the value option compared to Pacenti & Velo Orange £££

  • I've got a pair of Ukai 650b polished disc rims for sale here if they are of any interest?

  • I need some 284mm spokes. I have 16 in the parts bin. If I use 16 284s and 4 286s I probably won't die right?

  • As long as you don't run out of thread on the long ones you should be fine. Only other possible issue is if you're using a poxy single-walled rim, they might want to poke into your tube.

  • I have a set of these deep section road wheels: https://www.sigmasports.com/item/Vel/85-RSL-Carbon-Tubeless-Disc-Wheelset/
What considerations do I need to take to convert these to track? Can it even be done? Thanks in advance
