  • I'm just doing this chain waxing thing for the second time, I was fairly happy with the first go but I was wondering about people views on a between part of the process.

I've had my chains in a jar of white spirt for 48 hours, giving it shake around every so often, there now in isopropyl alcohol. Should I just give them a whip down after this and make sure there dry before putting them in the wax or is there something else I should do ?

I've got a slow cooker now for the waxing part, which sounds like it might be a pain in the arse do the time it takes for the wax to get up to temp, but it has to be better than the boil in the bag method I tried before which end up with the bag splitting.

  • I think I rinsed the IPA off mine afterwards but it's probably worse/not needed than just doing the IPA. Also, you can just drop the chain in (assuming you've got it hooked somewhere or are using a coathanger handle) and wait for it to heat up, you don't need to watch it - that's the whole point of slow cookers. Set an alarm if you must.

  • The YouTube video I watched had someone blast out the IPA with compressed air - I used a hairdryer to save time, but I sincerely doubt a 10 minute air dry and then into the slow cooker will cause any problems, the temp is low enough to avoid any issues with alcohol still between the links.

  • I just let it evaporate off, as I'm generally not in a huge rush when stripping a new chain. Slow cooker is the way. So much better than other methods :)
