  • Maybe check the hoses. Could be down to a hose having a split in the solid inner and the hydro fluid pushing out into a bubble in between the inner and the coating layers.

  • This is a smart idea I hadn't thought of.
Also the cheapest part of the system to replace so I'll give it a go.
    Thanks

  • I don't think it's very likely but if the hose got kinked it's a possibility, and if you looked at everything else, it's the one more thing to rule out.

  • what a piece of crap. 11t on some random chinese cassette- pos sunrace? 3 rides old

  • Would cable tieing the brakes on give you an idea if the outer had failed?

  • Sunrace normally sound, if you have the original invoice, you can get it replace under warranty.

  • Not sure. I had an outer fail once and that showed up as little bubble that grew and shrunk when you pressed the lever, somewhere half way down the hose. So cable tieing might've shown that, but I spotted it because it moved when actuated the lever.

  • On a scale of 1 to completely fucked how bad would you say this dent forming where the lug meets the frame is… hadn’t noticed it till recently on the wife’s bike, she’s not crashed it or anything recently

  • I think you'll have to take the paint off and see for yourself. I'd also try if a sharp object (pick, etc.) goes right through that rust spot or if the metal is still sound. Post a picture of what it looks like with the paint removed. :-)

  • Something has fallen or hit that for it to go that way. Just keep an eye on it and make sure rust doesn’t form

  • I think rust has already formed :(

  • The incredible shortness of that head tube requires this area to be quite strong...

I'd be thinking the next bike for the missus should be 650c, at least in the front, like a Terry. (Did anyone else build em like that, as in for women, not for TTs?)

On the other hand, pic doesn't show how much quill is hanging out. You want as much head tube in that gap between the fork and the stem extension as you can jam in, when a bike gets that small

  • Fuji did Terry-alike small front wheels for quite a few year, mostly 24” from memory.

  • Does anybody have any experience successfully running a Shimano 9 speed cassette with Campy 9 speed drivechain?

  • Hi, thank you. Seems like too much fiddling about!

  • Is there a forum consensus on red shift suspension stems? (Edit) Thinking it might be useful for cobbled classic rides.

  • I've tested a few costumers bikes with it over Girona cobbles, felt a lot less rattling than my rigid bikes.
People seems happy with it, never got any returned other than for tuning

  • Chain popped off on the ride back and jammed into the wheel, went to undo the rear wheel and realised that the axle (and hub bit) was turning with the locknut on the drive (chain) side, so I had to bring the bike back, grab a 17mm to jam into the hub side to stop the axle from turning. What's the issue here - have the serrations on the wheel hub somehow worn down and is that a part that can be replaced?

  • What’s your rear wheel setup? I’m imagining different scenarios based on what you’ve written.

  • Thanks. It’s a hefty investment for a stem, but they have a 90 day no questions asked guarantee so perhaps worth a punt.

  • Halo Aerorage - it’s a commuter I do not clean so forgive the gunk. Basically the axle turns with the locknut when I try to loosen it. I suppose in a pinch I could have done up the non drive side then loosened this one first..?

  • Do both side do the same? As only time that happened was when a 7 speed freewheel that had a broken axel.

  • My aerorage does the exact same thing, if you loosen the wrong side first the axle spins, tighten the loosened nut back up and the stuck one comes off. Wire brush the axle and grease it up before putting it back together and it’ll be fine for a month or so of winter commutes before it does it again.
Edit, thinking about it, oddly it’s only ever the drive side that does it. I’ve also snapped 2 rear axles on this wheelset in the 10 years I’ve had them.

  • First thing that came to mind was broken axle. Then reading your reply, second thought is bent axle, third is very badly seized bearings.
