What sort of given up...? Sometimes a heavy blast out with GT-85 or similar can renew a gunked up shifter, along with a brand new cable (inner and outer).
If it's snapped/ruined etc, then as you were

Yep, mine are ST-3400(just found the mark on the side). However, it's a 3 speed front derailleur (Sora). I don't mind getting rid of the small inner ring.

2 bike shops said they couldn't fix it.

Try using a hair dryer in the shifter too Soften the grease which has Harden then add a bit off wd40 and keep Operating the shifter at the same time should free it up.

Got a set here - double. You can have the lot (bars, stem, shifters) for 25 quid

You could upgrade your whole groupset to a more modern Tiagra for under £100...which is what I'll be asking when I strip the groupo off this bike (barely used)

A Different Approach
A neighbour asked me to help fix his bike. it is an old Orbea (about 2005?) with Shimano Tourney 8 speed and STI levers. The rear derailleur control cable was not doing anything.
I wanted to do him a favour, but I knew that: a.the bike was unlikely to be ridden much, and b. neither of us wanted to spend any money on it.
I couldn't get any joy out of the existing lever and being very old school I haven't much time for indexing or STI levers. Solution - I happened to have an ancient Simplex handlebar end lever (copy of the once very popular Campag lever). I fitted this - it wasn't even necessary to change the outer cable which went to the existing downtube cable stop.
Took it out for a road test and, rather to my surprise, it worked perfectly. No indexing, obviously, but it wasn't difficult to find the gears. Neighbour perfectly happy.
The experience confirms my view that, so far as ordinary utility riding and touring are concerned, modern bikes are way too complicated.

Couldn't agree more about complexity of modern bikes. I bought my current bike for 200 quid on FB but now I can't use it cos of aforementioned problem, which'll cost me X amount to repair. Ho hum..que sera...I've found a 2nd hand set elsewhere now. Thx.
Hi, my right shifter has given up on me. I can't find a direct replacement for the easiest solution and so it's probably cheaper to just buy a set (any type Tiagra, 105 etc) to replace the current one except that might affect the current set-up I have, which is 3X9 Tiagra rear mech, Sora front mech.
Pic of the current one attached - can't find a model number on it though.
Advice would be appreciated. Cheers.
