  • Midway through renovating a 60s bungalow and I need to prime and paint 7x doors and door frames, is there a forum approved knotting solution and primer? or does the use of a primer negate the need for knotting solution? Thanks for all the help and advice over the years from this section of the forum.

  • For standard knotting (which is often only done on new pine) something like Rustins Knotting is decent (and lasts a lifetime of normal use!).

If you use a primer like BIN from Zinsser it's shellac based so it is very similar to knotting.

With a lot of interior redecorating the knots are pretty dead and you will see if they're not because they will already have shown through the existing paintwork.

  • Gently heating the knots will tell you if they need treating if you are unsure.

Liberon do a knotting solution which for me at least turned some fucking awful sappy pine into something paintable that has since weathered well outdoors.

I wouldn't rely on primer alone tbh, even the spot-prime BIN.
